Not sure how goldsmiths interview went! But of an awkward question asked by the tutor - "What's the point of this I see dead people on the TV all the time"
To which my reply was "well I don't make art for other people to look at, what I make is very personal to me and that's what's important. I have nothing to do with the dead person on TV. They aren't an extension of me. Critics can say what they want at the end of the day I'm not doing what I do to please them" HAHAHAAA not sure what they thought of that. Though they still seemed pleasant, they weren't rude or stuck up in anyway. The student on the panel seemed the most stuck up out of them but he really wasn't that bad at all! I actually felt pretty welcome!

They asked me to direct what work we discussed and I made a point of showing them my own work rather than my foundation just to show I am keen for the subject. (Though i sneakily flicked through other portfolio pages just so they could see I can work in a diverse range of media)

They watched my short film and showreel and asked me questions about those regarding the sound mixing as well as the film.

They didn't ask me about any exhibitions I had been to (I haven't been asked that in my of my interviews).

He seemed quite pleased I had researched the course, I mentioned my interest in one of the specialised seminars you get to choose in year 2 and he said "oh well done you've researched those!"

Hmm other than that I can't say it was much worse than St martins! They asked simile sorts of questions.

Sounds like a good interview to me, the 'i make my art for me and me alone' is a great selling point especially for places like Goldsmiths (not something I personally buy into but is undoubtedly a valuable tool) that love the whole independent artist stepping bravely into the unknown.

I suppose the awkward questions are to acclimatise you to an 'art school environment' where you're constantly being challenged to spout new and interesting opinions on hot topics. (Thats kind of what artists are for these days).

Ahh that's good to hear I didn't get the vibe they didn't like me or anything. I mean the interview ended with the four of us giggling about some sort of joke about a memory stick haha!

I guess I've done all I can do, I mean I'm happy I got to the interview stage! If I get rejected then it's just because I won't suit the course

Ah blast!! I said pretty much the opposite when they asked me the 'who is it for' question. The interviewers I had were pretty giggly too - I had small parts of my portfolio in my pockets and they laughed and called me Mary Poppins - honestly I expected the worst but they were so friendly!
I guess it depended which tutors you got.

I feel the same about getting a place too - my folio was very painting based, though I feel they lean towards the 'conceptual' applicants as that's what they specialise in.

I don't think that matters, as long as you can argue a point and stick to it that's what they want to see! That you're passionate
