I consider my old head of year as a friend, he supports the same football club as I do (often see him at home games), avid car enthusiast and a general laugh when out on the lash.

Looks like manners were never high up on your agenda. 'Do you not have any friends'? Or do they all run away because you tell them to 'shut the hell up' whenever they try to improve your english?

p.s. if you want to call someone an idiot, using correct spelling and grammar generally conveys the impression of intelligence, placing you in a position where it is slightly more acceptable to call an individual and idiot.

It's one of those tricky situations where it slides into a little grey area. Although other people MAY be like "what?" I'm sure if you're two adults meeting on a friendly basis then it should be fine. I go into college to harass my old teachers all the time haha.
I'm friends with someone who used to work in my primary school on facebook and we talk sometimes. She wasn't a teacher, she was a teacher assistant and she also did gardening there. Wilebeest has the right idea in my opinion.
