The sound of hooves echoed in the ever-darkening day, clattering against the path, and then suddenly muffled by the vegetation of the forest, as Billy steered the horse through.

What is wrong with this sentence (Not a trick question I genuinely want to know if it is incorrect) and if something is wrong with it, could you correct it please? And no stupid comments like "People named Billy don't ride horses"

    I'd put:
The sound of hooves echoed in the ever-darkening day, clattering against the path, and then were suddenly muffled by the vegetation of the forest, as Billy steered the horse through.

It might even be worth spilitting it into two sentences where you've got the "and".
