I have an interview for PGCE Secondary English at Manchester Uni on Wednesday, and one of the tasks is: "Assessment of a piece of writing by a student. You will be asked to write an assessment of its main strengths and how you might enable the student to develop as a writer".

I was wondering if anyone has had to do this for their interview, or if anyone has any general tips? I'm not entirely confident about what is required - I've a few general ideas like constructive rather than negative criticism, get pupils to give feedback on one another's work, examine opening and conclusion to ensure that their argument is properly introduced/summarised (I like to think these ideas will come across a bit more coherently on the day...). Marking work at secondary level is something I've no experience of, and I know it's not as simple as getting out the red pen and crossing out all the mistakes. When I was at school all I can really remember is comments scrawled over my essays by my teachers, pointing out spelling and grammar errors, and asking me to elaborate further on points I've made.

Anyway, just looking for a few pointers that might help me narrow down my research a bit. Thanks
