How important would work experience be when applying for Economics at a top university? Would anything in the financial or business sector be beneficial? I might have a one or two week placement at an Accountancy firm - would this be good work experience?

Thanks in advance for any help

Top uni's don't care about random work experience (for non-vocational degrees that is). All they care about are your academic interests and pursuits. Extra-curricular stuff should take up no more than a fraction of your personal statement - the rest should be dedicated to your subject and related activities (in your case, Economics). You could put the Accountancy work experience into your EC section.
