    Hi guys,

Im in my final year of biomed, and really want to defer to sit my exams next year instead. If i do defer, I will be working as a HCA and apply to med during this time. Will deferring my degree put me at a disadvantage when applying to med school? is deferring frowned upon by unis?

any comment/advice would be much appreciated

    thanks!

Why do you need to defer at all? Do your exams, start the experience and apply in September/October. This wouldn't alter the kind of timetable of application for medical school that you'd be facing even if you did defer your exams .
I think you'll find that your university will want a very good reason for you to defer your exams; it isn't like school where you can just put things off. You'd need to take a leave of absence and then probably need to attend the modules again and pay another year of tuition fees. It would raise a question mark over your application.
Considering it in terms of an application, it sounds to me like you're trying to make it look like you considered medical school in your final year of university and then got the experience whilst still at university, just in time to apply. It doesn't ring very true. Having said that, I don't have all the information. I just don't really understand why you would need to defer your exams if you want to apply to medical school. Just finish your degree, start some work and then put in an application. As with any application to medical school, be prepared to go through two UCAS cycles before getting in.

In my opinion, the leap from second year to third year is quite big in terms of the work load involved, especially in Biomed because you'll have modules which require alot more input from you without guidance from tutors and lecturers. You'll be writing your thesis without much guidance. If you get out of education for one year, you'll find it beyond difficult to cope with the workload of third year when you start uni again.
