I think it is about time that either Universities accept BTEC's as equal to what they are said to be (UCAS points standard) or they change how much a BTEC is worth.

But anyway I did a BTEC First in Animal Care (Distinction *) and BTEC National in Animal Management (DDD). I know I will be ridiculed for this by the snobs of TSR but oh well

I'm not doing a BTEC but many of my friends who are fantastic musicians are, yet they are undervalued in university applications :/
So yes I think BTECs should be treated with greater merit proportional to how good they really are!

I am doing A levels. BTEC isn't for me imo.

But I support you. Most people try to portray BTEC people as dumb or academic write offs . This is not the case.

    Keep it up BTECers :borat:

    Ill join.
I did a BTEC National Diploma in Animal Management& first diploma in Animal Care.... for some people practical courses work a lot better than theory.
They are just as hard as a-levels but minus the exams. I got into uni, imo its one of the best unis out there, especially for doing a outdoors subject such as conservation!

I have a BTEC ND in IT (DDD). And they are undervalued, especially the top end grades. They aren't a doss, it does require a lot of effort to get a DDD.

HOWEVER, I'm going to throw my self into your negative pile by saying the reasons why I think BTEC's are viewed in a negative light:

    1. They're often not designed as an entry into university, but rather for employment. The skills taught in my case were focused more on System administration (using software) and taught very little maths or programming theory if any at all (which is what computer science is all about). And with computer science being the closest degree the BTEC relates to, I feel damn lucky the uni I got into even considered the qualification!
    2. A large spectrum of a grades - A single pass is a whole world apart from a triple distinction. This makes the entry requirement really low and seem like the easy option.
    3. No/Few minor exams - Lots of people hate exams, so this makes it look like the easy option.
    4. They pigeon hole you into a particular subject more than A levels do.

Honestly, If I could go back in time I would do A levels. At the time I thought the BTEC would prepare me more for Computer science than A levels would, but doing A level maths + anything for the other 2 subjects would have been infinetly more useful and kept my options open.

    Hey,

Just interested, do you have to take Geography/a social science A level alongside that to get into uni, or do unis not mind that you haven't studied Geography since GCSE? I thought about doing Geography at uni but I hadn't done it since A level so I couldn't get into any of the unis I liked (probably a good thing as I love my course now!).

I'm doing a diploma + Mathematics and Human Biology (A levels), mainly because it's a specialist diploma aimed at those who want to go into Biomed/Biochem/Biotech/Microbio/etc which I had originally wanted to do. But once I started on the Physics modules within the BTEC I was hooked and decided to stay on the BTEC (and continue with Maths+Bio) and then do Phy/FM once I have completed it.
