Talk about things your interested in, hobbies, etc. If they then go on to ask about work exp then you'd have to just be honest really.

Whatever you talk about, you should be able to find some way to make it relevant to the job. In your situation I would talk about my academic background and about my hobbies / interests in a way which focuses on skills I have gained which can be applied at work. Without knowing more about your exact situation I don't know exactly what you'd be best saying.
TBH I'm not sure "tell me about yourself" comes up all that often... I've never had it asked me, and as the interviewer generally has a copy of my CV in front of them it seems a little pointless - when the part of the interview comes where we discuss my personal attributes it tends to be led by them as they've generally been through it with a highlighter and have prepared questions. As far as ice-breaker type questions go, I've found "What made you choose to study engineering?", "What do you know about us?" and "Why did you apply to us?" to be much more common.
