Don't worry for most people it doesnt hurt, sometimes people find it a bit uncomfortable but thats only if the plaques bad, and sometimes then you'll usually be reffered to a hygienist, I work at a dentist and loads of people have it done! The scale just removes the hard plaque and the polish is just that! Most adults have it done on a regular basis when they come for checkups so don't worry. If you're still a bit worried have a word with your dentist before you sit down and they'll go through it with you

Sorry if I rambled a bit then, i read it back and think it was a bit unclear, ive found a site with a better description though

don't worry its nothing serious i have scale and polish every 6 months, its literally just scraping the white scale which may become plaque (but only if you don't brush your teeth often) off your teeth.
It doesn't mean you have bad teeth and its not the same as having anything done to your teeth or anything you just get scale when you might not be able to reach that particular area with your toothbrush.

plaque is actually colourless but decay is black the white scale on your teeth can develop into it through not brushing your teeth regularly.
