Do we need to revise the topic in detail or is it more just studying the pre release and basic knowledge of the topic?
From what I can gather I don't think you need to learn other case studies and facts and figures to go with this. You probably need a background knowledge about the development gap but I think you have to do more work on the pre-release and looking into more of the other things on it.

I'm quite happy it's development gap. I would have liked it on water conflicts but I would have loved it on biodiversity but that was last years so I knew it wouldn't be that. Different case study than I've looked at but it looks ok. It seems to cover some bits out of other sections as well.

learn the pre release inside-out, but make sure you know 1 or 2 detailed case studies that are not in the booklet

How could the Maghreb’s association with terrorism effect development?
What impact could the Arab Maghreb Union have on the Development of the area?
What environmental factors could effect growth in the Maghreb?
What social factors could effect growth in the Maghreb?
To what extent can tourism help the Maghreb to develop?

    Just some ideas

    Hi

We were hoping it was going to be water what with the lack of information on it in the course update.

Our teacher has been brilliant she has created a break down for the topic already and if i can/if people would like I will try and find a way to put it up here?

Our thinking as a class is that the key points are going to be the conflicts, tourism

Anyone else got any other ideas/resources?

    Would be great!

I think the focus would be around the source of income (GDP growth), and what affects it? Basically things like tourism is affected by terrorism in Algeria.

    Here it is

    http://www.scribd.com/doc/54701353

You will have to create an account I think and you may have to upload a random doc to download it but you can simply delete it after.

I don't have a summery but I do have a case study for California, its not much but might be helpful.

    http://www.scribd.com/doc/34061077/California-and-Water

I have also been doing a bit more research and found these
http://geographyblog.eu/wp/?tag=maghreb Good site likely to updated more as we get closer to the exam. Also covers other areas for our exam board.

http://www.arabwatercouncil.org/admi...co%20Paper.pdf looking at water stress in the region

Another thing that was pointed out was that there is a Vision 2020 now not just the vision 2010. Google it.

Hi, thought I could help with some themes I've come up with:

    Colonisation
    - Synoptic links – Superpower, what’s left behind after French colonisation

Unions – Research into all of them, Arab Maghreb Union (AMU), Greater Arab Free Trade Area (GAFTA)
    - Synoptic links – Superpower Geographies – nature + control of trade, trade growth? Tariff free?

    Barriers to development
    - Synoptic links – Superpower geographies - terrorism, increased tensions. Reliance on certain exports, iron ore – China’s demand.
    --> Current events – Libya

    Migration
Tourism and the economy – Morocco Case study, Vision 2010 and Plan Azur
    - Synoptic links – biodiversity issues, water scarcity

    Other synoptic links
    - Superpower geographies, China in Africa. China’s top 10 trading partners – Libya, Algeria, Morocco
    - Water scarcity – view 3
    - Globalisation – air travel – more accessible regions as flights are cheaper
    - Crowded coasts

Any other ideas would be great!

What about the sahara as a physical barrier to trade and development from that?

    civil wars?
    Oil exports?
    Debt?
    Migration --> Brain Drain?

the key areas to look at are

Colonisation --> Conflicts --> Energy Security
Trade --> Trade blocs and exports(raw mineral wealth and oil) Imports (Food)
Tourisum --> cheap flights--> mass tourisum --> degridation --> drop in tourist numbers
Water Scarcity -->over abstraction at coats desalination expencive tourisum exasibates
Global Warming --> increase water scarcity --tourisum effected by the changes to climate and coast line
Migration --> Brain Drain --> population pyrimid change top heavy

    Any other ideas?

Not sure if this is of importance as to themes, but Governance may come into it.

    • what type of political set-up does each nation have?
    • Relationship with the EU, and how this will affect development e.g. trade?

Biodiversity-State of terrestrial ecosystems (Figure 12) and possibly desertification (I can't remember whether it fits into biodiversity or water scarcity).
