# -2 squared is -4... watch

1. According to my calculator, anyone know what the problem might be here?

2. it's reading -22 as -(2)2 rather than (-2)2
3. try (-2)^2

putting in -2^2 will first square 2 then minus the result
4. (-2)^2

Bracket the negative!
5. You're typing [-], then [2], then [^2].

In standard notation powers come first, multiplication/division second, and addition/subtraction third. Because you haven't typed any brackets the calculator thinks you want to square 2 first and then put the minus in front after.

You want to type brackets around the -2 so it's (-2)^2.
