    I can't believe this :

Britain could be required to find more than £4 billion to help the European bailout of the stricken Portuguese economy, the Treasury has confirmed.

However there was anger among Conservative MPs at the prospect that the UK will have to help rescue another member of the eurozone, having already contributed emergency funding to Ireland.

But it confirmed Britain could be required to provide a loan of up to about £4.4 billion - 13.6% of the 37.5 billion euro remaining in the EU "disasters fund" after it was drawn upon by Ireland - as well as 4.5% of any International Monetary Fund loan.

Why do we have to cough up when we are not responsible for what happens in the Eurozone ?

I know it's a loan but money is still in short supply and our public services are being savaged yet we are still required to pay for someone else's mistakes ?

    (Original post by The Guardian)
The Government argues that Britain is bound to help under an agreement signed by former chancellor Alistair Darling in the dying days of the Labour government, committing all member states to act as guarantors of any emergency funding.
    Wtf Alistair - You monobrowed **** !

FFS. Right. I'm running for PM. I have two policies:

    1) Legalise the sale of cannabis and tax it.
    2) Stop all aid to other countries - we should be looking after ourselves first.

Disgraceful - we shouldn't be involved with ANYTHING to do with the Eurozone. If our government had any backbone they would use the desire to put forward treaty reforms to clay back money for Britain.

I agree with the 1st point but 2 is a very selfish thing to do. We can structure the budget properly and still have plenty left to give by not wasting huge amounts on pointless wars etc

The problem is with how the aid money is being spent.

If they do, I swear I will vote BNP next time.

Why is it we can afford a war in Afghanistan and Libya, and we can now afford to find £4 billion to bail out Portugal but we do not have enough money to support our students at university or the weak and vulnerable in our hospitals?

Edit: Well, clearly that was controversial.
I do understand the difference between structural deficit and cyclical deficit, but perhaps then that system then should be changed. Excuse my simplistic view, but at the end of the day, money is money and it should be shared according to what is best for society. And at the moment, I don't believe the government has struck the right balance, although I admit that it was Brown's doing not Cameron's.

    Eh.

I have mixed feelingfs about this, it is a loan after all and we stand to make money in the long run. But I hate how it's not a choice, all thanks to that little twerp Alistar Darling and bloody Labour. We are not a Eurozone country, we should have no obligation to bail them out.

You are not understanding the point; aid wouldn't be stopped only withheld up to a point, that point is obviously when we are out of debt.

You're probably right there, but when I see public cuts left right and centre, then see us spending and lending at the drop of a hat, it really, really narcs me.

We're tied down to the European Union, when they need something, we have no choice but to help.

I understand everyone frustration's especially when considering that in the Chancellor's first budget, a lot of money actually went to international aid instead of the public sector in Britain.

Nope.. No loans would need to be guaranteed if the investment banks, which Gideon (George for short) Osbourne is so friendly with, hadn't gambled so irresponsibly with the savings of ordinary people.
