Well, the Clio is French, so that says it all really. French reliability is crap, as the majority of Clio owners say on Clio owner clubs.

I hate french cars, if it was a choice out of the two my heart will win. I would get the clio, its a suburb car to drive with great steering and a slick gearbox. My experience with Corsa is not so good. I found the Corsa gearbox to be very wooly.

If you can stretch your budget (and can insure it), get the Corsa SRi (1.4) - you won't regret it

There isn't much performance difference between the 1.2 and 1.4 Corsa (about 10BHP) because of the extra weight but the SRi is nicer styled and should have better factory suspension setup (so long as it hasn't been chavved up).

If you're getting a pre-facelift Corsa (10/2000 to 09/2003) then definitely go for a minimum of a 1.2 engine. Facelift (10/2003 on), there's not much difference between the 1.0 and 1.2 except the 1.2 is a lot quieter and has slightly more punch in the upper gears.

One thing to check with a Corsa is the performance of the gearbox and gear changing - the pre-facelift cars (and early facelifts) used a poorly designed gear linkage that is prone to failure. If on driving the vehicle, it's a struggle to change gears at the low end (1st, 2nd and reverse) then it could cost about £150 to have a new linkage fitted). Just had mine done under warranty after it went last week

I have a vauxhall corsa SXi 1.2 it is a lush car. I agree the 1st & 2nd gear are'nt very good with wear cause my car is 03 and last month had to have a new linkage in the lower gears. However it is easy and nice to drive.

Cheers guys, I'd be interested in the facelift model for sure. I just like a car to accelerate when i razz it in first, and to be able to overtake well. I love the interior of the SXI, wudnt go for any other...that silvery gearstick is just...yeah lush lol

Reply 6

LOL that's the one I'd go for then

You after an early one (53) or something a bit newer?

Reply 7

If it's any endorsement seven of my friends drove mk3 (the one that's just gone) Clios, I can't drive but love the interior. Most of my friends learnt in Corsas and all of them hink the Clio is better.

Reply 8

Clio vs. Corsa? Different leagues...Clio everytime.

There should have been a poll. I must admit I have always hated French cars becuase they are so unreliable but I was god smacked when I drove that Clio (new shape) the gear change was just so slick and smooth. The only thing I didn't like was the brakes seemed a bit too powerful, in traffic I was scared of using the breaks becuase it would stop the car instantly,I prefered the Corsa's weaker breaks in traffic as it was easier to control.

Even though I don't like french cars, DO go with the Clio. I absolutely abhor the Corsa.

If you looking for performance and you have 6k, why are you looking at Corsa's and Clio's. You can get alot more bang for buck, what about a 205GTi? (Save a few grand too, which can be spent on mods)

Reply 12

I can think of nicer performance cars for £6k that can still get good economy.

Reply 13

Neither - go for a ford fiesta. You can get one that is less than a year old from ford direct for £6K. Either that or a Yaris.

However, if you insist.... Clio all the way.

Reply 14

Voted clio falling apart.

But I know someone whos got the 16v and it is rather nice indeed, but I can keep up quite easily in my 1.2 8v punt so its not really the most powerfull thing in the world.

Reply 15

Corsa, Corsa, Corsa, Corsa, Corsa!!!!
Not that great with the whole technical side of cars (although I have heard that the handbrakes on Corsas are a bit dodgy) but I'm lovin' the look of my Corsa!
Drive Safe!

Then it will be no surprise that GM designed the Corsa for girls, the only thing is I think they managed to totaly patroinise every girl by providing them with a wooly girly gearbox that has a mind of year own if you but even a tiny hint of force onto it. Thats what I loved about the clio you can slot the gear into place unlike the toy corsa where you notched it.

Reply 17

I think the corsa an clio r both girly cars.......dont buy any. Punto's r really nice n cheap.

Reply 18

Can't decide which one to spend my 6grand car budget on. Could someone tell me how the 1.2 16V SXI accelerates? I'm big on performance...so obviously the clio 1.4 would be worth consideration. And looks wise....they both make my tits squirt.

maaaan, with 6k i can think of about a dozen better cars. dont go for either

Reply 19

i learnt on a corsa and drive a clio - i MUCH prefer the clio. not only to a corsa, but many other cars; i think it's great (for a first car circa £6k or so). you should be able to get yourself an 18-30 month old clio for that price easily. it's fun to drive, and feels very safe because there's good visibility - i.e lots of glass around.

my one's a 1.2.. and it's got plenty of power for my needs.
