    Are carboxylic acids like aldehydes in that the carboxyl group is at the end of the chain, and thus, naming carboxylic acids follows the same rules as with aldehydes?

    So, we will not have in this case to write the position number of the carboxyl group?

    No.

    The carboxylic acid group could be on a side chain. (as could the aldehyde group, for that matter).

    Example, pentane-3-carboxylic acid. The -CO2H group is attached to carbon 3

    Example, 3-methylpentan-2-al. The carbonyl group is attached to carbon 2

    As we were taught:

    Aldehydes have the carobyl group at the end of the chain, and the general formula is: RCHO

    So, I think that it is incorrect the way you represented your aldehyde.

    Also, the general formula for carboxylic acids is: RCOOH, which shows also that the carboxyl group comes at the end of the chain, and thus, the way you represented your carboxylic acid is incorrect, ans I think your nomenclature is incorrect as the name of the carboxylic acid has to end with -oic acid.
