Cardiff uni, halls of residence, general questions

hiya, just wondering about the halls of residence at cardiff, as it is likely to be my first choice!
firstly, in your study room may you take a television? if you do, would i need to buy a television licence? is there a port for the television or would i need a crappy aerial? and finally i know this will sound stupid but are the terestrial channels in English or Welsh??
what are the ensuite showers like? are the toilets rather like aeroplane toilets as i have heard, in ensuite rooms?
and finally,,,,, are the rooms like flats or along a corridor?
i know these may seem stupid questions but no-one has been able to help me so far, and also the cardiff open day doesnt offer a tour of accomodation!

All residents of the United Kingdom with a telly behind a lockable door needs a TV Licence.

most unis have a TV port although some places demand a little aerial

The Telly is all in Welsh. Honest, its all in Welsh. BBC cannot be understood

OK Im joking, its all in English. All the Welsh can now speak english.

My advice would be pick some halls that are near to wherever you are studying and then ask about them here and google them. You should get a good idea of them and be able to make an informed decision

Nope but it shows a video . Although I don't understand why they can't offer tours.

You looking forward to the open day? I'm certainly am. I'm coming from Derbyshire so its going to be a journey and getting lost is of course going to be fun.

Yes you can have a TV in any hall.
Yes you need a TV licence for it.
I know at least in Talybont there is an aerial socket in the wall, though I know people with freeview boxes who use a portable aerial and they get more channels, lucky bastards!
You get the Welsh channels- BBC and ITV are pretty much the same as the English ones, though you get S4C instead of channel 4. This sucks because most programming between 6.30-11pm is all in Welsh. But just get freeview and all will be solved. We dont get channel 5 here.
In Talybont you have ensuite shower pods. These are good, and not insanely small. Nothing as small as airplane toilets!!
The rooms in Talybont South are divided into flats of 4/6/8. We share a kitchen between a flat. I think almost all of the halls have flats rather than a corridor arrangment. Just another door to go through!
The Cardiff open day does offer a tour of accomodation, well the uni wide one does. If you are coming to a departmental open day it wont. And it definitely does cos I went round Talybont and Senghennyd last year.
And the Law building is about equalish distance between Talybont Court/South, and Seghennyd. Closest to Aberconway and Column, and just across the road from the all girls one (I've forgotten its name!)
Hope that helps somewhat!

Cardiff has a huge variety of room and so you can't really say what rooms have and don't have. Some rooms don't have TV sockets but being in a city reception is not a problem.

I wouln't worry about the size of the ensuites there is plenty fo room in them.
TV is not all in welsh.
some halls have flats but some have corridors connecting 2 flats with a kitchen at each end, both are great

I'm not sure about Seghennyd as I've never been there, but Talybont is great. They all have en suite (as opposed to Seghennyd), and South and Court have internet access. Talybont is the biggest residence, has it's own bar, is really near to tesco, and only about a 10/15 min walk from the business building

Yes it is. But so the railway line also runs alongside Talybont South (from my window there is a 5m verge of grass then train tracks!). I thought I would hate it, but honestly, you dont even notice it. Its a branch line, so theres only like 2 trains an hour, and they stop running between 12am and 6am I think. But I have no problems whatsoever with the train noise, the housemate noise is more annoying!
But yeah, dont base you accomo choices entirely on the trains, its really not that big a deal.
I rather had my eye on Senghennydd, position-wise... but are they not ensuite? Ideally, I'm looking for ensuite and self-catering, and I'm going to be doing English, so nice (short ) walking distance to the English bits, and into town as well - any suggestions?

Oh, and internet, hehe. Am I asking too much?

No, Senghennydd doesn't have en suite. First year English lectures are in the law building and seminars are in the humanities building, both of which are about a 15 minute walk from Talybont. I'm not sure how far they are from Senghennydd, but it's not that much nearer. Senghennyd is much nearer town, it takes about 30 minutes to walk there from Talybont, but there are buses, and if you just go into town after your lectures it's only about another 10/15 minutes (depending on where you're walking from) so it's not that bad.

Hi guys.. just wondering what accommodation med and nursing students usually go for? I mean having to go to the heath campus all the time is a pain.. do you go for somewhere right in town so you're near the buses.. or the ones around north road because their closer (but then only have 1 bus going to heath right?)

University Hall has loads of medics and the like - there's a guy in Tower who one of my flatmates knows, whose flatmates are all female nurses! there's a free bus that runs every hour from it, past Heath campus and round to the Union. Its quite a way out of the centre and its more quirky than luxury, but it has its own bar.

I know there are lots of medics in Talybont. I dont think it is too far to Heath Park, but I have never tried! Talybonts good cos its kind of in the middle- easy access to the main area of uni buildings in case you have the odd lecture/dissection down there, and the SU and town. Also close to Tesco, and it has its own bar. I know my flatmate is a medic, and he has a bike! Works for him!

Woot here comes the Uni Hall expert lol. But yeah, there's a fair amount of medics and nurses up here. Our rooms dont come with tv ports nor do the kitchens - but none of us have bothered with a tv in our flat - we're just so busy so £120 or whatever seemed a waste. But every other flat does so if you make friends with them it's always useful when 5:35 hits lol. As for the channels, Wales has crappy S4C so no Hollyoaks but some people have picked up C4 with ariels. The bus is alright, it takes awhile to get used to, it's just annoying it runs past the Engineering block just as I finish lectures so I always have an hour to wait. The bar in comparison to Talybont is crap but hey, never mind, it's alright for what it is.

I would advise not to live in Senghennydd cos it really is a bit of a crap hole, the only plus I've seen is that it's 5 minutes from the SU, 5 minutes from Engineering, 10 minutes from town. I've got a mate off my course there who showed me around. I'm not really sure why English students would want to live there. I think if you're gonna be in the main building apply for Column Hall and the other one. I was at a party there last night and it's pretty good and the location is good too, about a 5/10 minute walk from the SU/main building.

im a medic and im in talybont north...its the same distance between the biosci building and the heath, but tbh, in your first year you go to the heath maybe once a term! i have had to go up there just once this term!!

also there is never like a medics residence and a business residence...everywhere has a good share of all courses!
i live in senghennydd hall, not court. court is really not that nice, ive been in one flat and its not pretty. hall is really nice, we get ensuite and an evening meal (tho its not all that and i end up cooking for myself later on anyway). i live in a flat with 10 other people so its pretty huge, but i think we're one of the biggest flats. the train line is not a problem at all, i dont even notice it even more, more annoying are the people in the courtyard, drunk, making loads of noise when ur trying to actually get some sleep (ie. 3am this morning). senghennydd definately has the best position, ur right in the middle of town and the uni, so you can just literally roll out of bed at 8.45 and still make ur 9am on time in the humanities building - as i am (as i have done far too many times this term...). you can also just pop into town whenever you feel like it, without it being a mission from pretty much everywhere else.

hope this helps everyone.

Hi there, I might be doing postgrad programme(Planning actually) next Sept. and just wanna know which hall of residence is better? I'm looking for self-catering, ensuite and it must have internet connection. And also it'd be better off quiet(very important!!) for studies.

Any ideas?

Pretty sure Uni Hall all has net connections, and the building i'm in is pretty quiet but also busy at the same time (if that makes sense). Talybont North doesnt have any net connection but South and Court do (let's hope it will be problem free next year lol).

Senghennydd...think that all has net connection too but bit of a crap hole really, very noisy and lots of fire alarms in the middle of the night i've heard.

You should probably go for the smaller ones that i keep coming across at the most random times.

Thanks for the info! I was considering Senghennydd but after reading this...
Is the Uni Hall only for undergrads? Seems that lots of postgrads live in the Talybont. Or is it sort of free-for-all?

And what's the fee like after June/July as one stardard term period ends? I might stay for a full year. (Sept. 2006-Sept. 2007)
