Hey, just browsing the forum, and apparantly people would rather be at Oxford than St John's?

Why is that? Is there a valid reason?

Yes. Oxford is noted for its superiority to St John's College, Cambridge in many areas, particularly in that of not being St John's College, Cambridge.

It's just a dig at John's really  - ie "even Oxford is better than your college" (so also a dig at Oxford, I suppose).

Would rather be at John's in my stupendously big set!

Would rather be at Oxford than have to sleep in a room where bf's random strange roommate wanders through at various inopportune moments :p:

Lol, I think even I'd rather be at Oxford than that!!! Luckily I don't have a roommate so I think I'll stay at John's!

Didn't you have to share last year?

He's getting quite well-trained now, though I feel a little mean for effectively causing him to play gooseberry in his own room a lot of the time.

Anyway - John's is a decent place really, just their sports teams are a bit up their own arses (from my experience) and they like to be big and loud and red.

so what is wrong with St John's?

See above. They have a reputation for being quite public-schoolboy-rahish but that's not really true. I do think their sports teams can get a bit that way (and the boat club!) but in general it's just something to take the piss out of.

My boyfriend is at John's, and as you can see from my post above, I don't appreciate the fact that 2nd years have to share sets (two rooms + bathroom - the bathroom is off his room so the other guy has to come through to use it).

From what I saw of it on the open day, unfriendly porter (in comparison to Trinity) and some odd-looking/ugly designs on buildings hidden somewhere at the back (nowhere near as nice as Trinity).
That's about it really... but what's really wrong with St John's? Well... as a Trinity applicant I'd have to say... everything. Especially the fact that it's not Trinity. :p:

Yep I did share last year, but me and my friend were right at the bottom of the ballot and so ended up (and might have chosen anyway?) in North Court, where you don't have to walk through each others rooms to get anywhere. Which suited us both as we both have boyfriends...

Hehe....I think you're referring to Cripps. It's a lot better on the inside, but yep, really ugly on the outside!

New Court IS pretty on the outside but almost all the rooms there are shared, with all the aforementioned inconveniences that brings. Some of the 3rd year rooms on the other side of the river are amazing though.

And Cripps is hideous, but loads of colleges have minging bits (Trinity's Wolfson Court - I think - is not the most attractive!). The rooms themselves aren't that bad, though the bathrooms and kitchens leave something to be desired. And there is always the problem of Cripps TV...

Some of the people I've met were lovely. Some of the people I've met were arrogant tossers (I don't know if this is a result of going to John's or that this is the mentality of people applying there). It has a higher proportion of arrogant idiots than most. For example, on a recent formal swap my friend was told that she couldn't possibly have attended a public school (she did), so she asked if they thought she was "common", to which they replied yes!!

*is proud to be common *

You mean "The Wolfson Building". It's been vastly improved this year by being covered in blue scaffolding sheets. They are redoing the inside so at least it'll be all flash and modern on the insider next year, even if it still looks like crap on the outside.
St. John's has a library to die for. I used the toilet there on the open day.

It's all standard Cambridge banter, especially if you're at Trinity like myself, John'sthink they're as ood as us when they're blatantly not! The best they've ot at the moment is a facebook personally attacking me!

"Oh! We'd rather be at Oxford then St. John's!
