IBS-anyone got it?

hi

I've had syptoms(sp?) of ibs for 3 years now and it's really putting me down.
I'm only 15 and no one else my age is suffering from it :frown: I'm currently seeing doctors and paediatricians and they're running tests but the process is slow. All they told me was it was likely to be IBS (as the crossed out the other possibitilies) or one of them teenager things which happen because of the hormones blah blah blah. IBS is more common in people over 25 and they're telling me it's a teenager thing. I don't see other 15 yr olds in my school suffering. It's very uncommon for someone of 15 to have IBS apparantly.
I can't tell teachers as i find it embarassing and i find it more humilating when I 'need to go' and go out of lessons more than once in a day, people for the past 3 years are getting very curious and are starting to make jokes.
I just wanted to know if anyone was going through the same problem, maybe not at the same age, but same sort of situation and problems, when did it start, what problems occur, what you did, how your coping etc. It would help alot if i knew people who are going through similiar problems.

Thank you everyone

Hi i totallly understand your problem. i am 18 and have IBS since i was 14, the pain even led me to have to be referred to a consultant and even now they think i mite hav chrones disease like my mum. all i can say is that i have tried to not let it affect my life and just ignored when i can-you cant let it take you over, i know its hard but you cant let something so rritating ruin your life-your'e only young. eat and sleep-dont drink too much and you will be helping yourself a lot.

Yeah I have to visit the loo during every meal I eat. It's really embarrasing! I have to be very careful with what I eat and I stick to things like Bran Flakes and brown bread. A drink called 'Fybogel' really helps. My Dr prescribed it to me (as it's a bit pricey) and it tastes foul but it provides some relief. It's the bloating that drives me crazy though....everything I eat or drink causes my tummy to bloat to the extent that I look pregnant! Grrr.

I'm sorry to say that its a life long disease and there is no magic cure for it, it gets better and worse but you will always have it.

Omg..im on Fybogel too...just started taking it this week...it is horrible, loads of granules of something just floating and if you drink it all but half is still sticking to the bottom of your glass of water it chokes you! I'm ment to have it 2 times a day but it's so horrible when you're choked by it that i only manage one a day. I'm also on Mebeverine tablets which i've had before and it's working ok. YES bloating is a killer with IBS, I cannot eat breakfast in the morning because anything i eat even a little tiny piece of sumthing such as toast or cereal bar makes me badly need to go to the loo. It's horrible how when u eat a tiny bit and you bloat, get wind then get urges to go loo just because of a slice of toast or something! I know it's important to eat breakfast but i just cannot, otherwise i'll end up with urges to the loo before i go school, then again within 30 mins! :frown: :frown:

I am going for an endoscopy on friday to see whether i have it. I know how annoying it is at school. I got sent home over 30 times from january to july this year! It worked out more than twice a week. It is annoying seeing people in school being so healthy and you're just feeling like crap. Especially the people who smoke. Hopefully the doctors will be able to control it for you. It has taken them 8 months to finally narrow mine down to IBS, and they still arent controlling it.

Another reason it stresses me out.

The seceret to drinking Fybogel is to make it with cool water....not really cold stuff. Then really really stir it and while it's still swirling around, down it! My boyfriend knows I can't stand it but also knows that I have to drink it so he won't let me out of the kitchen until i've drunk it!

ok..i'll keep that in mind. Wish me luck cause i nearly threw up taking that choking fybogel!

Has anyone tried Peppermint oils for ibs. I have and it seriously stops the bloating and wind, just not the urges. I had to stop taking them cause of the new meds :frown: For those who suffer bloating and wind try peppermint oils! Never mind Peppermint tea, try the peppermint oils! :p: They stay intact until the reach the guts...hmmm.... :p:

You should really get checked by the docs, ye it can get a bit embarassing but there are probably patients with even more embarasing problems than this and the docs will completely understand. The many times they've encountered patients with stomach and bowel problems is uncountable and they deal with it in a sensible and understanding way. They themselves have probably had bouts of bowel problems at least once in their life. You should get checked incase it isn't Ibs but some other problem

I've had this for 3 years and i absolutely hate it! It's extremely hard for me because teenagers my age don't understand it and just tease and get suspicious. I always hated myself saying why couldn't i be like every one else at school- not suffering from what i have to suffer. But by getting checked by the docs and getting advice from them and some medication, it's be easier to cope with.
I hope you get checked out! and do not get embarassed cuz doctors will understand.
