For the S2 calculations using the normal distribution it often wants you to find the mean or varariance when the the probability of a range of values is given.

The textbook uses z values but my calculator will integrate the norm cdf. In the exam am I just able to use a trial and error rather than the actually method and get full marks?

No. Use the actual method for full marks.
