Which of these Universities, from the 1994 Group, would you say could be considered equal in prestige to a Russell Group University.

I know prestige/regard, call it what you will, varies a lot within The Russell Group itself, but just generally speaking, which ones could quite easily slip into The Russell Group?

Thes ones I think are on par are in bold, and maybes in italics.

    University of Bath
    Birkbeck, University of London
    Durham University
    University of East Anglia
    University of Essex
    University of Exeter
    Goldsmiths, University of London
Institute of Education, University of London
    Royal Holloway, University of London
    Lancaster University
    University of Leicester
    Loughborough University
    Queen Mary, University of London
    University of Reading
    University of St Andrews
School of Oriental and African Studies
    University of Surrey
    University of Sussex
    University of York

This just comes from recent talks about how non-Russell Group Unis are increasing tuition fees. Let me know what you think.

EDIT: I am not saying that The Russell Group is the be all and end all, I am just wondering, going by the mention of it so often in the news recently, what people think. Thanks.

    As I said, speaking generally.

Russel Group isn't the be all and end all of quality, they're just a particular group of universities. Durham is clearly better than some of the Russel Group universities, it's just not in the group. I'd say all of the ones in bold and italics are on par, speaking generally.

Depends how research intensive they are... Considering Russell Group gets a lot more funding, I don't see how other unis can compete.

    RUSSELL SHMUSSELL!

Aberystwyth isn't in the Russell Group but has a better Computing department than Cardiff, which is in the Russell Group, so as others have noted, it depends on which department!

Hmmm it really depends on the subject to be honest. I know that Essex is probably not as good as 'some' of the Russel Group uni overall but for social science, I would rate it higher than 'most' of the RG unis. However, speaking generally, I would say most of them are as good as the russel group unis. Russell or 1994 are just the name of the groups, it doesn't really means unis are of greater quality. Not always, at least.

I agree with a lot of what your saying , but i would also include SOAS maybe and definitley Queen Mary its just simply underrated despite giving very high research :/

What is this TSR obsession with the Russell Group?!

It's a collection of research intensive universities, however, they are not all fantastic. They are not all brilliant universities. There are some (relatively) poor universities in there.

Royal Holloway, Exeter, York, Durham, Bath, St. Andrews and Leicester are better than some Russell Group universities, IMO. Particularly Cardiff, Belfast, Newcastle and Leeds.

To all the people who say that Russell Group universities are the best.

    Where would you rather go?

    Cardiff or Durham?
    Newcastle or Bath?
    Belfast or Exeter?
    St. Andrews or Leeds?

Equal in prestige? Durham and St. Andrews blow Cardiff and Belfast out of the water.

Are we talking strictly prestige, or which we actually feel to be 'better'? I think Durham probably turns more heads than most of the Russell Group when it comes to the former.

I am in total agreement about the amazing weight put behind Russell Group Universities. Hence this thread. I think some have taken it the wrong way though.

Well in my opinion Sussex has the best physics course in the country so I'd say it was better than any uni in the Russell Group.

    Lancaster.
Russell group unis are noted for their research. Lancaster has one of the best physics research groups in the country -it currently holds the record for once being the COLDEST PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE!!!

I didn't apply there. I just visited and the physics staff showed us some of their toys. They are definitely a reputable uni. It probably isn't really recognised here for being small/near Lancaster.

Leicester, Loughborough, Exeter - and no Lancaster?

And UEA over Lancaster, in terms of your italics stipulation?

    Care to explain?
