In the states they're often called "Chucks", short for "Chuck Taylor", from the "Chuck Taylor" insignia on the logo.

No, I'd cimpley say converses or hi-tops, 'trainers' is an unessecary addition.
I'd never thought about this issue properly before. Now I'm all confused, so I'll go back to calling them cons.

Unnecessary for some it may seem. But that doesn't make it any less correct.
