    Good idea or bad one?
Ive done it before, but was wondering about health risks involved?

Pretty dangerous, especially if you're not a strong swimmer. I was watching an episode of Helicopter Heroes and a young kid was swimming in a lake with his friends, he went under and never came back up.

If you google "risks of swimming in rivers", I'm sure something would come up.

Depends on the location. I've swam in loads of rivers in Canada.
As long as it doesnt move too fast and isnt filthy you should be fine.
I prefer to wear kevlar coated water shoes I've stepped on 3 fishing hooks in my barefeet before.

Rivers are fine provided the current isn't too strong for you, canals are just gross generally. We used to swim in canals and locks all the time as kids, looking back it was really dangerous and unhygenic.
