    CSI New Mexico.
New Mexico is the Southwest, very different culture from the Deep South.

Because of Winn Dixie is a good depiction of modern southern rural life.
O Brother Where Art Thou is a great movie, though that's more like ten years ago.

In the last 5 years I'd have to say the blind side is pretty accurate

Well, the majority of the episodes are all in the deep South. I'd suggest the first couple of episodes in the first series though, as it 'sets the scene,' in a way.

Treme - a drama looking at a neighbourhood in New Orleans rebuilding itself after Katrina. It should be available for online streaming on a few websites.

That would be a good one, could look at race and wealth

    Minus the vampires/werewolves/fairies/shape shifters
But I think it definetely represents the lifestyle of the deep south, especially the whole religion and discrimination stereotypes
