Relaxation Techniques

Help!

I have been so tense during this term and desperately need some proper techniques to help me wind down. For the past three days or so I've simply had to move my neck a little and I've instantly pulled the muscles. It's so hard to eat because as soon as I lean forward to put a fork in my mouth my neck cracks and I've pulled the muscles again! I've tried sleeping, having a bath, the usual things that help you relax but I'm so tense with interviews, dissertation, money and everything that I can't seem to get rid of all the worries. Any suggestions of how to deal with stress and get rid of tension would be brilliant.

excersise...even if it's just going for a brisk walk.
i find running on a treadmill listening to cheesy music makes me feel a hell of a lot better when i'm stressing out, as you totally focus on yourself and not work!!
try it!

I did pilates for a while. That was quite good because they teach you breathing exercises and you get to stretch too lol. It's also a laugh when you fall over (or wear cow print socks when you have to put your feet in the air).

Have you tried meditation? Don't instantly think monks going "ohm" and reaching Nirvana, there's a technique called Clinically Standardised Meditation and it's no more than controlled thinking really. It's easy to learn but has loads of beneifts.

Are you offering to be my punchbag

Thanks for the advice guys *cradles neck* I'm going to go for a fast walk to do some Christmas shopping tomorrow. I'd be more interested in what you've got to say Juno cause it's a lot about me worrying unduly.

I used this to learn it, and although it looks blue and kinda spiritual it doesn't have to be unless you want it to be.

There's a few bits if you google for them, but I don't know if they'd be detailed enough to learn it.

Drink tea from time to time; not only a good source of antioxidants, but great for when you want to relax.

Like someone else mentioned - EXERCISE....it really does things for you, mentally, physically etc...obviously you aren't relaxed when running, your heat beat is higher and so forth, but after period of sustained, regular exercise, body is certainly more relaxed, lower resting heart beat rate and so forth....i really would also opt for the bath thing with nice oils etc, even as a bloke, can tend to be something women go for, but for some reason my housemates have done all sorts in it (along the line of 'downstairs' hair, god knows why its in the bath) therefore me cleaning the bath to take a bath, then with prospect of having to clean it again only couple of days later...no thanks..

but i recommend exercise, but i can appreciate that this cold weather is hardly an endearing prospect - i guess you could burn oils, get those long sticky things which burn incense, they can be pretty cool - or play some Air, Zero 7 et al...lie down on the floor, legs apart, body apart, let go, listen to the music with the beautiful smell drifting past you!!! hmm thats some prospect...i could do with some chill time myself at the moment.

exercise lots, herbal teas etc... its sounds like its mostly stress related, so try cognitive thinking, meditation like juno suggested. take at least 15 minutes a day like b4 bed to jsut lie there, warm and just let everything slip out of your mind, if any worries try and creep back in, push them out consciously, say like FECK OFF and then you should manage to just be a bubble head for a while. you can do the cognitive thinking any time of day, jsut try not to think about anything for a few minutes a day, otherwise ur brain overlaods and it disturbs your sleep too.
