Yeah. It's not so bad here as it is in America where basically there are quotas of those who get A grades on their papers and there is an expected curve of distribution. Used to rile me when I was marking stuff as a TA.

I think at points this has been the case though. A mate of mine went to Cambridge a few years back and said that there was an element of this in his marking. It may have just been lost in translation what he meant though.

My knowledge of the American system is from films where the professor gives you whatever grade they so wish. I also know people can go to w/e classes they want to an extent.

Don't see how this changes anything - surely students already know the best subjects to take for their degree? For mine it was maths and physics and there was never any doubt in this.

Well tbh if you don't know what subject to take that will get you a place (providing you meet the grade) then you are an arse and don't deserve the top unis

This doesn't make any sense. It is also more general - I believe the lists will be much like the Trinity list.

    Okay erm how about this:
If you don't know what subjects you need to do in order to get on the course you want to do then you don't deserve to go to university.

Also most should know not to do soft subjects in case they want to do something else and not their previously chosen path.

    1) We are not talking about obvious subject-specific prerequisites.
    2) The point is "soft" doesn't objectively mean anything here. The point is that arguments such as "Is Law a soft A level" will be put to bed with respect to specific admissions.
