"He noted that Enoch Powell, best known for his "rivers of blood" speech from 1968, excelled in three different careers, firstly as an academic where he excelled as a classics scholar and became the youngest professor in the Empire, when he was aged just 25.

With the outbreak of war he began a swift rise through the military ranks, being one of just two people thought to have risen from the rank of private to Brigadier during the course of the war.

After the war Powell, who spoke eight languages, moved into politics. Lord Norton said he became one of the great parliamentarians of the 20th Century, although he failed to become one of the great politicians, because he put his beliefs before ambition, notably when he declined government jobs - and resigned once - because of disagreements over policy.

Lord Norton says Powell was a "complex man if ever there was one", uniting with another great parliamentarian, Labour's Michael Foot, on issues such as opposing House of Lords reforms and on Europe. His rivers of blood speech made and destroyed him politically, he adds. "

Shame to be honest... Enoch Powell puts most, if not all, modern politicians to shame.

Nice. Are you planning to apply to university this year? And which ones, if you are?
Yeah, I'm hoping for September 2012 entry but I haven't decided where I want to go yet. I'm still looking at prospectuses at the moment.

That is like a foundation degree right? congratulations
I'm not sure actually, because I don't know what a Foundation Degree involves. A description of the Access to HE Diploma is in my reply to Teaddict's post though.

Well the Socialist don't start campaigning until October 2011 (from Wiki... I know )... whereas Front National have already started campaigning (something I clearly missed ) and Sarkozy only announced he is running recently (I say announced, I haven't located anything other than his cabinet reshuffle to say he is most definitely running.. but it is obvious he is running to anyone tbh).

If DSK was able to get back to France some point soon, he may be in with a chance.. although I don't know when the latest date is to out your hat into the ring... so to speak (and I cba to look it up ).

He's mediocre at best, it has to be said. I honestly have no idea what these judges are talking about.

Just find it interesting that you criticise a relatively good piano player when you can't play the instrument at all. Just curious I guess :holmes:

He is no Beethoven, Bach, Mussorgsky or Mozart but he is better than mediocre.

Eh. I cannot play the piano but I have about 15 years of classicla and other music under my belt, including experience at pretty much everything in an orchestra. Including teaching it. And I know both a large number of phenomenal pianists and a number of piano teachers. And know how a piano works, and what the technique is, and how the music is put together. And how music in general is put together (this guy is not good at it). I'm a pretty good judge.

Sorry, I just really ****ing hate the argument that if you can't do [talent] then you must have no ability to judge it. Huge numbers of people a week judge premier league footballers on their skills and have two left feet.

    /unnecessary rage.

No where did I say you cannot judge it - what I was alluding to, however, was that certain people who lack skill shouldn't judge it. Take your football example, I shouldn't judge a footballers skills because not only can I not play football to save my life but I do not understand the rules or anything else about the game.

Oh and just for fun I am going to quote H.W. Fowler: “Pride of knowledge is a very unamiable characteristic, and the display of it should be sedulously avoided.

    Well wipe it out with:

    /finally gets around to listening

My brother goes "haven't I heard you play this before" and I simply respond "no but it's Vivaldi, so yes."

    Still good though.

I pretty much don't experience pride ever. This is more me being pissy and pointing out why I'm qualified to judge.

    And you insinuated it boy

I insinuate a lot of things

This is more of an audacious rant about ones "qualifications" to judge what is or is not relatively commendable exploits in the art of the piano.

Well his technique is good but he doesn't know how music fits together.

Or he did that deliberately, but I doubt that.
