As entertaining as UKIP are, why do they call themselves Libertarians? Yes they have some Libertarian leanings on some issues, but overall, they aren't Libertarians - they are Conservatives...
Well yeah but many 'conservatives' are actually 'liberals' nowadays. And many 'communists' are 'socialists' and many 'anarchists' are 'minarchists' or 'libertarians' or just people who don't want to pay taxes.

    Labels are meaningless

Labels are only meaningless because people abuse them.

My ex was robbed today and I laughed in her face when she told me, I'm a terrible person... serves her right though.

Why does it serve her right? How is someone being robbed funny?

Yes. One of my friends from America refers to herself as this. The first time I heard, I laughed a lot. she was not happy. It's basically a poncy way of saying libertarian.

No. In political science, labels are pretty meaningless. the abuse of them is the major reason why but they're not particularly useful anyway because to get any usefulness out of them you have to go into a large amount of detail. Saying, for example, that China is communist but has capitalist tendencies economy wise is pretty useless for all but pub gossip. You need much more detail than that.

Yes but when you have having a discussion with someone when in depth discussion of various ideologies isn't necessary and one where you are speaking in general terms, labels are bloody useful - rather than describing someone in depth, you can instantly write them as Conservative or Socialist. That gives someone a pretty good idea.

But most of the time this happens the labels are abused, misused. As you noted above.

Indeed, but as I said, that's the only problem. Like when people call Obama a communist  It's ****ing nonsense.

But labels are pretty useful to generalise with.

Well they're the two shops closest to me so I just thought I'd try my luck. One just said no while the other said no but offered to put my CV on file. Better write a CV.
