What is emo?

Emo? just wondered because for all I know I might be emo, and form the comments I've read its a bad thing to be... I mostly like indie music like the Libertines, Babyshambles, Franz Ferdanand, Radiohead etc. but I also love Nirvana, REM, Muse, Queens of the Stoneage, The white Stripes, The Strokes etc. etc. Am I emo? and if not what would I like if I was?

Do you have black hair, various piercings and stripy tights with a powerpuff girls t shirt? If not, you're safe.

emo = complete and utter bull sh*t

No. If you were emo you'd like embrace (not the ones who are in indie scene), rites of spring, dag nasty, mohinder and other such bands.

Then there's nu-emo as they like to call themselves and i won't even go there.

Don't worry, with bands like that, you're certainly not an Emo. Emos like Funeral For a Friend, Taking Back Sunday, Dashboard Confessional and other such crap.

Music is subjective, it's something to everyone and whatever you think of a band it may touch a person in another way and they may like them. So i don't think your opinion of the above bands are valid. It's a simple question - not an opinion of what you think of certain bands.

True, but they're crap in my opinion, and that opinion is valid, as is the opinion of those people who think that Funeral For a Friend are musical geniuses. But my main point was that the OP isn't an Emo, so need not worry.

I'm with you, i much more prefer a randomly generated beat sped up and repeated hundreds of time with absolutely no thought put into it, to the bands mentioned above. I think their might be a reason why bands bring out perhaps one album per year if your lucky compared to people like 50 cent and these drum n base albums which come out at the rate of 1 per week - i believe this reason to be the levels of talent involved vary a fair ammount. I have to admit my hair isn't black and i don't have 1 piercing on my body but i can tell what good music is.

Firstly, who the hell mentioned drum and bass? Secondly - I hate emo, you obviously like it, which is fine. But don't try and convince me that it's 'good music'. Good music (in my opinion) is not emo, nor is is rap, drum and bass or rave/trance. Anyhow, this is getting offtopic. I said emo was crap, and that's my view - don't cry about it, or take my opinion to heart.

Oh, and the reason that emo bands take a while to release new albums is that there is only a certain amount of songs you can write about your girlfriend dumping you, before you run out of creativity.

What are My Chemical Romance? goth, emo ?

It's an evolving genre! MyChemicalRomance are probably emo now. You said you thought FFAF were goth. Well have you noticed all the goths around your way are mellower than they used to be? Less spikes, blades, and more tight jeans, tight tees and hair slicked across their face? That's because goth has phased out and emo has phased in. Some people would say it's the same thing, it's similar I guess and open to interpretation, but that's how I see it; the woefilled goth, instead of angry/misunderstood goth of yesterday!
So FFAF were maybe "goth" before because that's what they fit best. Now they probably slot more comfortably into emo.

It's basically up to you what is what, feel free to shout me down, but that's how I'd describe it (badly). Franz Ferdinand and what not are indie though so don't worry.

Ok I'll try not to worry, Although I do quite like some gothy bands, for example The Cure, Placebo, Suede, Muse which I think all have a gothy, indie isound/image and I did die my hair black for a whlie so might I run the risk of being phased into emo?
I'm pretty sure Emo is Explained fairl well here
