Glandular fever

I might have it. I went to the doctor on monday who gave me penicillin for a sore throat. This has got no better at all and if anything is worse with extreme tiredness and general feeling bloody unwell. I went to the doctor again today who wants me tested for glandular fever.
Im seriously freaked out , i told my mum who seems uncharicteristically worried and my boyfriend doesnt seem to give a damn. I checked the symptons online and im pretty sure they are all there.

Has anyone else had this? How long does it take to go? I've heard some absolute horror stories about being unable to work and study etc , im very very worried.

Please help

Come on its not that rare?
Hey,
I had a "mutant" version of glandular fever about 18 months ago. I had all the glandular symptoms - extremely sore throat, hard to swallow, face ballooning up etc etc but hardly any of the feverish ones. I was really tired all the time too however.
My took about 3 weeks to go but then I did have a mutant. It's really not that bad. I did give it to my boyfriend but as it was a mutant he didnt catch it very badly at all.
My advice is, just get yourself tested to find out exactly what you've got, and if it is glandular fever then just get on with life as best you can - don't worry about it, its really not that serious!!

Why are you so freaked out? It's only glandular fever, it's pretty common and in most cases not exactly life threatening. I've just had it..yeah i had to miss some lessons and it was annoying but it's not end of the world

My univsersity stuff and job are very very important to me. thats why im freaked out.

university and your job can wait for a week or so. University is important to me too, but if its that important then you make up for the work you missed and its no biggy.

Ive had it but I was only 12 so it didnt matter too much if I slept all day every day. I think it took me about 6 months to recover fully. Theres not a lot you can do if you get it. Just lots of rest and drink lots of fluids.

Hi

I was diagnosed with it 2 weeks ago and I was pretty freaked out about it too. I spent two weeks in bed with it when I was really too ill to get up. I am at uni and went home for this time but I have now come back to uni and am trying to catch up with the work. It is really difficult though cos I am so tired and finding it really hard to concentrate. I still sometimes have a sore throat and often get headaches. I am also really sleepy and sleeping 12-15 hours a day. I am also trying to take it easy and resting a lot. It is really frustrating not being able to do work or socialise etc. like you want to. I find it is quite depressing and it gets me down but the doctor said it is common not to feel yourself for some time and the only thing to do is to rest.

Hope this helps - you have my sympathy, it was horrible to feel so ill!

Hope you feel better soon, xxx

i had it right before exams it was wierd cos i had 2 have a blood test cos id just joined a new surgery and the doctor asked me to come bak as i had an abnormal monospot or something and the day i got that letter was the same day i got my sore throat.it was horrible and it hurt so much i couldnt eat and went to the hospital.really theres no medication for it.but i got these asprins from the chemist and just let me them dissolve on the bak of my throat.it hurt but seem to clear my throat enough for me to eat.it took me about 6 months to get over it i was always tired and sleeping so much.i was able to get more time for exams though which did help.

I had it during my A-levels and it's still lingering. I was sleeping from 4pm - 6am, going into school (I managed to not have a day off because I knew how important it was that I passed my A-levels) and coming back home to sleep again. I know how vexing it is. And it's not only passed on by kissing (if that was true then I would have had to have been unfaithful to my boyfriend!!!) It can be brought on by stress. Recovery time varies from person to person but stress can prolong it, which is why mine is still around. I never ever had a sore throat with GF but my neck glands were the size of golfballs!

I have really swollen glands and I'm tired all the time. Fortunately I don't have a sore throat so I thought I didn't have glandular fever, seems I could be wrong. Oh well, just have to wait for the blood test results. Apparently there is something wrong with my thyroid as well, I don't know if this is common? In fact, I don't know anything... Lol.

It could be underactive. My aunty has it and before she was diagnosed, she thought it was perfectly normal for a person to sleep as much as she was doing. They thought that I might have had it too as my hair started to fall out but it was all stress and GF. I still have to have afternoon naps - thank goodness for the days off at uni!
Well if this helps, I heard somewhere that if you get enough sleep at night (say 8 hours), it does wonders for your immune system - it's like meant to be one of the most beneficial things you can do to your body.

That and take vitamin C. Get well soon,

I've had it, like said above theres nothing you can do but sleep it off and treat the symptoms with painkillers. Mine was stress linked as it started just before my exams. It seems to be going round at the moment quite a few people have come down with it. Hope you feel better soon x
