Aural isn't too bad.

In my grade 7 oboe, I got like 10 out of 18 in my Aural tests.

And then in my grade 8 I got 18/18

My examiner was harsh for grade 7. :///

Had my grade 8 singing exams before Christmas and I got a merit considering it was my first music exam...well pleased with myself

I also did my grade 6 cello last term and got distinction, and got a merit in my grade 6 music theory

I've only got passes in piano grades 1-4 which might be a result of being forced to cram in grades 1-3 in 3 years by my primary school teacher :frown:

Did my grade 4 two years ago now (after going to high school and changing teachers) and got better marks which is a good sign.

Doing my grade 5 in a couple of weeks though - I hope I get better marks this time!!!

Reply 65

Normally merit!

Reply 66

Most of my pupils were merit/distinction

Reply 67

I play a few instruments but I've only ever sat grade exams in piano  I got bored of the easier grades and skipped to grade 6 to make it more fun

Grade 1- distinction
Grade 6- distinction

Reply 68

I got distinction in my Grade 5 piano, albeit only just (120/150). But yay! So pleased with that result!

By the way, is it a requirement to do Grade 5 theory before you move on to Grade 6? My piano teacher says it is :frown:

Yes it is a requirement! Also, you will the find the aural tests much easier if you do the theory - especially once you get to grade 8!

I stopped after grade 3 though after that last grade being so dodgy

Clarinet

I always find the comments on my aurals interesting, get 0 on the singing every time ahaha, my sight singing is absolutely appalling

Hmm... varies depending on the instrument. Violin and recorder Grade 8s were both distinctions, I also got a distinction in my ATCL diploma on violin, but my oboe Grade 8 was merit and on piano I've only done up to grade 5 and I think I got a pass on that, piano is definitely the hardest instrument for me...

I don't really recall doing grades 1-5; I didn't fail, but I'd expect they weren't exactly exceptional. I'm of the opinion that it takes until post-5 for anyone to be at the kind of standard when they can really start to enjoy their instrument - certainly for me, its only been in the last year or two that my 'passion' (horrendous word) for the instrument has really taken off, and exam results have followed.

Trumpet

Grade 6: Distinction - About 4 years ago now

Grade 7: Merit (Booooo!) - About 3 years ago

Grade 8: Distinction - Beginning of this year.

There is slightly more to than meets the eye, though. I was fitted with orthodontic braces (full on train tracks) over 2 years ago now, well after my grade 7 and just as it had become quite a part of my life. I'm not sure if non-brass players can empathize, but this was probably the single most unhappy I've been for a long time; every time I put my instrument to my lips I would bleed and could barely produce a sound. I was genuinely heartbroken, and it was months before I could play a single note.

Since then, it was a real uphill struggle all the way, but 2 years on and still with braces fitted I was persuaded to think about taking grade 8 . I didn't' want to do it, determined to wait until i was able to play as well as i could, but the braces stayed and I was running out of opportunities. Reluctantly, I agreed, and through some serious perseverance managed to get a distinction nevertheless. Chuffed.

It is a requirement in ABRSM but isn't in Trinity. It's recommended to though!
