Nice to see you posting in here.

You need no previous experience of the forces, or for that matter any sort of clubs like scouts. You just need to have a good basic knowledge to pass the interview and an interest in the Army. From a couple of posts that you've posted before I think it's fair to say you are interested. Just study up, and try your best.

Personally, I did a year but it wasn't my cup of tea so transferred to the TA.

I did it and had an awesome time, started with no military knowledge/experience went to a welcome drinks night as a 2nd year ended up on selection weekend and signing on the dotted line.
From our OTC and from speaking to some others (although this is no means a generalisation) they do not expect applicants to be miltary buffs before they join or have much/any milatary knowldge, the interviews were very informal and you do get to run round in green jumpsuits with bibs on.

I did 2 trips to africa and a skiing week plus there was tons of other adv training on offer and sport.
The best bonus is you get paid which as a poor sudent is very useful. plus it looks very good on a cv!
You basically have drill nights weekly which you should really go to if you want to do the mil training courses and then weekends away where you shoot things and run/crawl round in the mud (fond memories of Barry Budden in Dec  ) Then most OTCs have a winter week long camp and a 2 week summer camp where you do a 3/4 day field ex adv training etc.

I loved it, aberdeen has a good otc, they were our nortrhern rivals but seemed a good bunch all OTCs have mess's whihc has cheap booze, lots of parties and balls.

Hello, I joined the bristol OTC this year and I recommend that you join, no prior experience needed and the recruitment weekend is just a chance to see how well you get on with other people and the staff. Learn a little bit about current affairs! I've been there a couple of months and the friends i've made are amazing, def sign up with them at the freshers fair!!

Howdy Boyo. I spent almost 5 years in Edinburgh UOTC, if you want to have a really good time and meet some excellent chums join the OTC, plus it is great for building your personality and confidence. Before I joined my confidence levels were down by my boots, I was pushed into situations I would normally try and avoid but it benefited me in the long run. Aberdeen, the Pipes and Drums are a bunch of raving boozers.
I have jumped ship and now going cap in hand to the RAF.

Lol it must have been so good you chose the RAF over the army!
im a first year in London OTC and im having a ball (literally, the winter ball was yesterday). it a genuinely worthwhile experience, no other university club/society can offer you even remotely the same bredth of activities that the OTC can.

there are some who have been in cadets, but the vast majority won't have done anything green before.
a small word of caution: i dont know what the situation for aberdeen is like, but selection for ULOTC, despite not being difficult, is by no means a walkover. this year was particulary oversubscribed- around 300 applicants for 192 places. around 80 went away from the selection weekend disappointed (given that some dropped out and some failed the medical).

I too have just joined the Bristol UOTC. It's really great - I can't stress enough. Check my sig to see why. (Though I've my MTQ1 final ex this weekend...:biggrin::redface: )

I've just joined the gun troop (despite having my bursary sponsored by the RE) - and they look to be a bunch of jokers too.

How come you chose the RAF over the Army out of interest?

Well - I've done my tests - this is just our final ex (and half of my intake are trying to skive off).

Northern Lights was an experience to remember, alas, no longer. My last Northern Lights was the last for Cultybraggen. It is held in Redford I think, or was it Cameron Barracks, Inverness?
That mess was really a mess, I don't think I have seen soo many tennents cans before or ever again! the benefit of those nissan huts where when nature called hanging out the door was nice and easy.
I personally am jumping ship because the only way one can fly in the Army is the AAC, most exciting being Apache, however I wouldn't feel safe in a chopper after seeing what HVM can do to the poor wee things!

What does the medical actually consist of? Im hoping to join aberdeen otc and would really like to get in any tips?
Congratulations on resurrecting a nearly 5 year dead thread.

What would 'tips' to pass a medical consist of? You are examined by a doctor to ensure you are not an unhealthy wheezy risk. There are loads of (more recent) threads on here about OTC - have a search.
