Endoscopy

I am finally having this horrible endoscopy tomorrow. Luckily i am only in a day ward so i am wondering how long i sohuld be in hospital for. I need to be there for 8am, and i can imagine i'd be in theatre by about 10-11am. So how long should it take me to recover from general anaesthetic?

I wish Jamie was here, he was good at this type of info :frown:

What are you having that for? I'm not an expert but I think it is just a couple hours before you can leave hospital. You will be a bit out of it for the rest of the day though.

It is to see whether i have Crohns Disease or IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

Well I had a general anaesthetic a few months ago, and it only took about half an hour for me to recover enough to go home and I was completely fine by the evening (to the extent that I was camping and I had no trouble - long story!), but it completely depends on how you react to the anaesthetic.

is it when they put long stuff throught your mouth to check your stomach?? if yes, I did it like 3 times, and it took just 10 min. not painful, but still now comfortable...good luck

Everyone reacts slightly differently to a GA, but endoscopies are quick procedures, so the GA will be relatively light. You could need to stay for a few hours or so but unlikely to be a lot longer.

I imagine that if they're looking for IBS they might be going in the other end...?

Duodenal biopsy hopefully will show evidence of inflammation if it is there to be found therefore ruling out need for a colonoscopy at present.
(unless thats what he's going for but from talking to him i dont think it is)

Whatever side they are going in from, i.e. either a gastroscopy (going in via the mouth, looking at your oesophagus, stomach and duodenum) or colonoscopy (going in via the anus, looking at the colon) I can say from what I know from Germany that everyone here (unless they explicitly don't want it) gets medicated with a Midazolam injection.
This should give you the sensation of going to sleep and you should have a memory gap of about 1-2 hrs. An alternative is Propofol which is also used in general anaesthetic as hypnotizing medicine. This method is not a general anaesthetic, just a sedation.
Both these medicines wear off pretty quickly, but you must go home with help and not drive for 24hrs, since your reactions might be slow.
I have had both medicines for endoscopy and both work very well, although I found Midazolam wears off faster.
