The sky is green and everyone has 5 legs. Other than that, there's not much to say.

There is alot of history. Why dont you go up for the day. Its only 2.5 hour train journey from london. My mate goes and loves it.

Its cold, its windy, the weather is ****, thats my main gripe.

Parts of York are absolutely ****, luckily the Uni is in one of the few nice areas of York, and if you're a first year you're unlikely to venture too far into the **** bits.

The locals are mostly very rude, and theres a lot of chavs, the drivers are ****, especially if you're used to driving in London.

The town centre is absolutely awful for shopping, so if you're expecting it to measure up to anything like London standards you can dream on.

Same with the Nightlife.

Traffic is bloody terrible as well, but you'll be used to that if you're from London.

Theres lots of pretty things and historic *****, but really, how much do you care after seeing them a few times??

Basically - there are many better places to live in the world, and the UK for that matter, and given the choice I wouldn't live in York if you paid me, but going to Uni here doesn't give you must choice does it?

Thats just my opinion anyway, no doubt I'll get the usual 'don't be so miserable, if its that **** you wouldn't be here' comments, but whatever.

Thats all.

Im thinking of applying but coming from near london- i dont know whether i would enjoy york being so far up north. Ive been to sheffield and barnsley and i hate them, however ive been to crewe and i liked it through cheshire.
Good news for you.

I'm originally from Barnsley, so I can appreciate that yiou don't like that town too much...it's one of the worst places I've ever been.

Moving to York for uni was like moving to paradise in comparison.....I'd say the worst part of York is comparable to the best areas of Barnsley and all stuff lie that.

If you hated Barnsley, then I'm sure you'll like York....take this from someone who spnt the first 18 years of their life in Barnley and has been in York for the next 4/5 years.

What planet are you on? I've never seen a chav in York in my life

And what parts are you talking about? They are nowhere near the uni or the city centre, and theres significantly less dodgy areas than pretty much every other UK city.

Compared to London, the drivers are a godsend, and aren't the locals supposed to be the friendliest in the country here?

You're either taking the piss or your blind.

York is one of the safest places in the UK, one of the most attractive, and the town centre is fantastic! Lots of small boutiques everywhere to explore, whilst also catering for the big shops...

It's weird. It's full of little tiny shops. And it's easy to get lost.

Do you live in York? If you do you evidently spend all of your time in your house if a) you've never seen a chav b) think people are the friendliest in the country here.

It is like Bath; they both have a fudge shop

I never really see that many chavs, and the ones I have seen have never actually been causing trouble, which effectively makes them nothing more than uneducated filth who dress badly.

I really like York as a place to be fair. End of.

York is filled with chavs. Mostly they are restricted to the college or to YSJ (which does also have non-chav students if you look for them), but they certainly exist.

However, the university itself is a lovely place, in my opinion. It is one the nicest areas of York, and everyone knows it has a very good reputation for the vast majority of subjects. There's even a Buddha on campus. What more do you want?

Shopping wise, York's not much to write home about. I think it's good if you're a tourist, because there are a lot of quaint, sweet little shops that sell non-essential stuff, but for a student it isn't a dream. There are the chain stores that you'd expect but nothing out of the ordinary. However, Leeds is not even half an hour away, so if you feel desperate it's fairly easy to get some half-way decent shopping time.

The nightlife is...well....it exists. There are chavvy overcrowded bars and some places that are uniformly packed out with students and a few dodgy "clubs" (think revolving dancefloors and eighties music...although that is only one of them). It's OK. You can survive and not feel like you're living in a village.

If you want to see some chavs you need to get yourself either to where I live, Clifton, Tang Hall, or down town on a Friday/Saturday night. It will literally sicken you to your very core..YSJ doesn't have many chavs but its full of trendy *****.

I'm going to visit York early next week. York seems to be a very friendly and warm town; the people who I have talked to over the phone seems very nice and open. While the weather can't compare to San Diego, it will be nice to see the seasons again. As long as York has a Marcs and Spencers, I will be in heaven. hahah

After reading the wikipedia entry for chavs, are chavs people who wear excessive jewlery, fake designer clothes,or a sloven?

www.chavscum.co.uk will explain.

And York has about 9403033 M&S's, last time I counted.
