I really dont see that many chavs here. Obviously theres the odd few. And Cardiff does have crime, but where doesnt anymore? Its definitely no more than any other city. In fact I feel a lot safer wandering around Cardiff on my own at night than I did at home.

When out in Cardiff, I haven't really seen that many chavs. I mean, there's a few - but you get a few wherever. All the chavs tend to hang out in the outskirts and less so in the centre. Cardiff's awesome though - will be sad to leave next year :frown:
As for crime, don't know much about it. Isn't there a webste or something you could try. Maybe try googling crime rates in Cardiff. I dunno to be honest!

Its around 35-40 per thousand population. Bradford was around the same.

Its approximately double the BA Postcode which I believe covers part of Wiltshire.

Kensington and Chelsea (SW) has crime around 40-50.

that's useful. thanks. i was just wondering whether it's as much as in birmingham. also i believe cardiff has a better english course and the employment rate is higher from cardiff than brum. also, seeing as i live in sheltered little wiltshire- going to cardiff won't be as big a shock as going somewhere so multicultural as birmingham- it'd be a real culture shock.

actually, the crime in brum is less than that of cardiff!! but i still think that there is a bigger variety of cultures in brum.

The thing is, statistically it doesn't compare as well as you might think, but its out-of-the-way - as long as you stay out of the rough bits it isn't bad and its mostly theft, not violent.

Yeah, I mean every city has it's good and bad spots but the figures don't show that. Me coming from Portsmouth/Southampton it's a cultural shock not to see chavs everywhere. I mean, back home I'm not sure if there's more pidgeons or chavs - and there's a lot of pidgeons! As for crime, the thiefs that know their stuff will be in town on the very student streets - that's the worse that I've heard by ear, not much violence really. My friend in Nottingham says that on every corner there's basically a punch up but I'm yet to see one lol.

what i find amazing is that there are so few... Its great! There are certainly only a couple in the actual uni, that I have seen anyway (im sure theres more because i dont believe that i know all 25000 people in cardiff....;-) it is a great city tho and people try to report crime in newpapers and some might think it is a bad city.. Let me assure you it is not... If you do choose to go walking on the Taff Trail at 10 at night with change jingling in your pocket with a short skirt on tho you are asking for a mugging really arent you.....

chavs are on the decrease and the abundance of emo's (who are harmless, just are visually annoying) are increasing. That's all really. Crime is as crime goes, standard I'd guess. I live in Ty Gwyn in University Halls and my building has been burgled twice, in two weeks. But that was early on and one of those (in fact, dare I say it both) could have been protected if students were a little more wary about who they let into their own building.

but that sort of things happens everywhere if the opportunist is given the chance.

what is bad about culture shock? it has to happen sooner or later. I've got strong ties to Cardiff, I think its a great city in most respects. As to crime, when I said to a mate I might be going Cardiff, he said "mmmm, rough city", and I was thinking yeah probably is, and then realised, well, its probably true for any big city if you venture into areas where you're asking for it.

you could get a kicking anywhere in the UK if you tried hard enough, if you keep yourself to yourself, you'll be fine.

When my friend came down from Liverpool for Halloween, we spent a lot of time wandering around the city center and the bay just shopping and being nosy tourists (something I hadn't had a chance to do since coming to Cardiff) and she actually commented on how nice everyone was. Some kid came up to us trick or treating, just in the street, and when we explained that we didn't have anything with us he said 'oh, not even twenty pence?' which we thought was quite sweet. Kids in Liverpool woulda had a lot different reaction. And they definately wouldn't be being followed by their mother five steps behind to make sure he was behaving. And, personally, I don't think Liverpool is that rough. I was really impressed by Cardiff that weekend.
The only thing I would say is that I've seen more fights in Cardiff on a night out than I've ever seen back home. But the police arrive sharpish. Much quicker than I would have expected.

Having lived in the city my whole life, I've got to say, we have chavs. Have you heard of GLC? they're literally one town away. Thats not to say there are more chavs than in anywhere else, because from my experience, it isn't the chavs that cause the trouble, it's just the trouble makers often also happen to be chavs...there's a very strong identity to the city, a stereotype really, that people here tend to be very upfront about things, which might lead to more late night stand offs in bars, but to be honest, I haven't really eyewitnessed that much crime in all the time I've been here.
I'd like to add that cardiff city centre, being quite a condensed area, has the most CCTV and police coverage of any city this side of Pyongyang. As someone above commented, town on a saturday night is bedlam, and the police are out in force to prevent violence, and this is pretty effective.
I'd imagine that newcomers learn of the hotspots soon (there aren't very many of them). I really don't think the crime rate/ chav prevalence is high enough to solely justify not coming here, it's a great little city ( That's an oxymoron and makes no sense, but it's really the best description for the place...)

I dont goto uni in cardiff... but its not that bad. Newport is far worse!!

Reply 13

I think Cardiff is bad for fighting when the clubs close at night, remember hearing some police program on the tv saying it was the worst city for it. But you get it wherever. Whenever i've been out to Cardiff, daytime or nightime, it's been fine. Obviously there are places to avoid, but that's how it is everywhere.

As for chavs, well it isn't just chavs who will give you a kick in you know, but if you go around with that kind of attitude then you'll have problems anywhere.

Definitely Newport is far worse and Newport is only 4 miles out of Cardiff so i'm guessing most of them would congregate there. I remember i went to Newport once (which was voted among 100 worse towns in UK) and their were chavs burning this skip. I went to Cardiff for refuge...

think newports probably a bit more than 4 miles??

Yup, more like 12 miles.

Try www.upmystreet.com I use it to check out stats for all of my uni choices. It'll tell you about crime rates, entertainment, housing conditions, traditions, etc, etc. It's really very good you know.
