Could you apply to Oxford (or cambridge) for two different courses?

Obviosly if you did, your PS would be mighty ambigous and might scupper your chances at both. But technically could you apply for two courses? And then hope to impress at interview. Afterall lots of PS will be aimed at courses other than the one at oxford or cambridge becuase they are applying for other courses at other unis.I've never heard of it done before but I cant see why you shouldnt be able too, for example applying for Classical archaeology and Ancient History and also History both at Oxford, the P.S could be pretty similar there. So does anyone know about this?

I suppose you could, although I don't know. And they might suss something if you send in 2 Oxford/CAF forms, that maybe your commitment to the subject is less than total, and so instantly reject you?

I think if the subjects are similar, there'd be a clash in interview times, which would make in impossible.

You can't. You're not allowed.

Why? And who says?

Reply 4

UCAS won't let you, it's not possible to apply to more than one oxbridge course. It will just come up as error on UCAS Apply.

Reply 5

Why not? You can do it at most, maybe all other Unis.

It's just the rule. That's just the way it is, get used to it.

It's because applying to two courses at one of them shows that you aren't 100% committed to whatever subjects you are applying for. And applying to a course at both Oxford and Cambridge isn't allowed because they are both really competitive and want you to be 100% committed to their uni and not the other. Plus the fact that they have so many applicants and so few places they haven't got time to waste interviewing you for two courses when in the end you can only do one of them.

It's the same kind of idea as with Vet/Medicine courses. You can only choose four different Vet/Med courses to put on your UCAS because competition is so high.

It's perfectly fair really, considering they are the top unis, they can make up whatever rules they want and there's nothing any of us mere mortals can do about it.

you can apply to both if you apply to an organ scholarship and/or if it's your 2nd degree

You can't apply to both Oxford and Cambridge in the same year, let alone for two courses in the same university. They have enough applications to process. :p:

In my interview invitation was sth about 'let the college know before/ when you arrive if you want to be considered for another course'.

yes, if you're talking about Cambridge, that means if you'd like to switch to another course for part II, maybe doing two years of maths then switching to natsci, or something like that.

dont be a prat - we are talking about oxbridge here, not any university - if you read back up you will see that has been explained several times.

There are certain subjects which you can put a particular other subject as a 2nd choice at oxford, e.g. If you apply for physics you can put earth sciences or material sciences as a second choice and it doesn't actually use up an extra ucas space.

Obviously I was referring to Oxbridge.

I like Oxford's CS course (from the look of it) as well as their Computer Science and Maths course. Do I really have to apply to just one? :frown:

(I'm in year 12)

I know that I can be considered for E&M even though I've applied for PPE.

The answer should be fairly apparent from above. What normally happens with smaller courses such as the history & something else courses or science and maths, they will often consider you also for the subject, ie history or computer science, that takes in a lot of applicants.
