Being sick is ruining my teeth (warning: ED trigger)

I used to suffer from problems with my eating quite badly, like I wouldn't eat and if I ate what I considered too much then I'd be sick. Anyway I got better a couple years back.

I got sick a few weeks ago and couldn't stop being sick. I lost some weight, almost a stone, and everyone said I looked good. But then I started putting the weight back on as soon as I got better and now I've started being sick again deliberately. I've noticed one of my front teeth has a little dent in it at the back, I guess it's been worn away by being sick. And I can see little black spots on a couple of my teeth at the back. I'm also scared because sometimes there's blood when I'm sick.

I don't want to go to a doc because it'll go on my records and I've seen magazine articles about where that's affected people's future jobs. Can anyone help me?

Please don't tell me to go the doc because I want to fix myself again thankyou

i take it that you're suffering from bulimia, right? don't worry about the dent in the back of one of your teeth, i have that, and i can't remember the last time that i was sick (due to drinking - i'm not bulimic) so i don't think that's related to the vomiting. however, the black marks on your teeth i have absolutely no idea about!

as for their being blood in your sick, that is a bit worrying. have you told your parents about this/do they know that you're making yourself vomit? i know you say that you don't want to go to the doctor, as it may affect future employment, but that is complete rubbish - employers can't discriminate against you for something like this, plus they would never know because of patient-doctor confidentiality, so they could never gain access to medical knowledge about you, so please, don't worry about that as a reason for not going to the doctor.

if you're afraid of telling your parents, then you should still at least go to the doctor, as he will be able to give you a considered professional opinion, and help you get over your problem again, plus he won't tell your parents because of patient-doctor confidentiality again. i really hope that this advice helps, and has alleviated your fears about going to the doctor for some help.

This might fall in the same category as seeing a doctor, but how about counselling? It sounds like you're really unconfident about your weight, and resorting to making yourself sick is not the answer. You've probably heard this before, and it may be the last thing you want to hear now, but get some help from someone, please!! Goodluck xxx

Where exactly did you read that?

PLEASE JUST DO THIS FOR ME -. you really shouldnt make yourself sick because you think it will make you look better and people will be nicer to you. You wanna know what turns a guy on? Confidence. Eat when your hungry, stop when you're full, be bubbly + vivacious n if ur half fit you'll have the guys lining up. You really need to stop this bulimia thing...you'll look back in 20 years and laugh...thats if you havent killed yourself on your own vomit.

He has a point. Although I wouldnt have worded it in that way, but he has a point.

Bulimia is an illness though. You wouldn't tell someone who had to have their arm amputated because of gangrene or something that they should just live with it because people in other countries get theirs blown off by land mines and that's more serious, would you?

I think maybe a little more sensitivity is perhaps needed in this thread
If you've never had an eating disorder or lack the ability to emphasise, go read up on the subject before you make such inane and hurtful comments.

Anonymous, I don't know where you heard that your medical record can affect your future career path but as far as I know it remains completely confidential. By approaching a doctor, you are taking the first big step in helping yourself get better. Don't forget they meet lots of people like you all the time. Vomiting blood is NEVER a good sign. Please get yourself some help asap.

A doctor can refer you onto a counseller to help identify what triggers your bulimia as well as a dietician who can help you establish a healthy eating plan.
Meanwhile concentrate on building up yourself esteem, which may definely be a factor contributing to your illness. Go do some sport or whatever else your good at, or just hang out with some friends who make you feel better about yourself!

Its not that simple though. i saw your last post, but i think it got deleted. can i just say, you are the cretin. you clearly have no idea what people with bulimia go through. it is an illness, its not something people want. would you say things like this to someone who has cancer, or someone who suffereing from depression?

Yes yes I know all that. I'm asking for advice on HOW to stop.

And it's nothing to do with attracting guys! I have a boyfriend! Why do you automatically assume that I'm doing this to pull?

You need to try to get to the bottom of why you do it, and then work on those issues. Do you have low self confidence? Are you doing it for control? That kind of thing.

The EDA website might help, but a general google search will reveal hundreds of other sites.

I think thats the best advice. and i think you should go and see your doctor. i know you dont want to, but they will be able to refer you to someone who can help, it will totally confidental. these people will not judge you, unlike some people on here, they will try to help you. its the best way to sort this out.

If you really don't want to go to the doctor and tell him/her that you are making yourself that you a throwing up then that is your choice. However I think it is really important that you go to a doctor about their being blood in your vomit as this is not normal and can be a sign of something more serious. I have a dent in the back of my frount teeth and the black marks could be a sign that you need a filling. If you can try and call the eating disorder help line 0845 790 9090 you don't have to give your name and you might find it really helpful.

indeed. and as for some of the posts removed on this thread, this isn't a debate, H&R is *meant* for friendly and constructive advice. if anyone wants to discuss whether or not they personally consider eating disorders an illness and what a discussion about it, they can go to D&D.

Future employers won't see your records - you're covered by the data protection act so they can't go looking into it. This was something i was concerned about too. There may be a question on a form which may ask though; in which case if you lie on an application form you risk losing your job.

Thanks Miles

I can assure anyone that it is an illness and I don't want to do it, that's why I'm asking for help :frown:

This is one of the first times I've asked for advice and look at what's happened, this makes me think I shouldn't tell anyone especially a doctor.

Thanks Ariel I will have a look at that website.

Edit: thanks to Rachel as well

honey don't let some ***** put you off asking for help.

Is it the feeling of the food in your stomach that makes you feel sick or is it certain foods or any kind of food?

Reply 17

In case anyone wanted to argue about whether E.Ds are 'proper illnesses', I've made a thread in D&D

Some have the right to ask for doctors records before they will employ you, but you have to sign soemthing first. Not many though, mainly the armed forces.

some sound advice and a nice helpful attitude. you sound awesome and i will definetly be repping you.
must disagree on one point though, it's not usually a good idea to encourage someone with an eating disorder to exercise as often they transfer or echo their problems in excessive exercise.
