Trichotillomania is an Impulse Control Disorder characterized by the repeated pulling out of one's own hair or eyelashes and eyebrows.

Does anyone here have a disorder where they have a habit of picking at their hair? Does this disorder exist??
I knew someone who did and she had no eyelashes

No its not, its ****ing devastating. She wasn't bullied but she had severe OCD.
Yeah, I used to....crazy ey?!! Lol I started by pulling out the hairs that have all the kinks in them - if you feel your own hair, there are loads of smooth ones and the odd one that feels all kinky and when you pull it out it randomly twists and turns in loads of directions. So I just got kinda addicted to pulling them out, like when you bite your nails, it was quite soothing. Then for some reason I started getting scabs on my scalp so I used to pick them too and then my hair would come out with the scab and I would pull out some more hair and so on....
It wasn't really that serious for me, just a bit of a random compulsive habit which is completely sorted out now.

That's what I started doing and also I pulled the little flyaway hairs at the top of your hair...but it got quite bad and I had a small bald patch, but it's all grown back now thank god. I'm glad I stopped though - it could easily of gotten worse, I'm sure.

Ditto - it lasted for about a year on and off with me, in my last year of Primary school....not nice at all.

I pull out my eyelashes sometimes when i get stressed

I do it, and i hate myself for doing it but I can't help it. Sounds really stupid i know but i've been doing it for the past 4 or 5 years and can't stop
the worst thing is when people notice that i've not got many eyelashes cos i try to hide it with eyeliner and mascara but sometimes they notice and say something and i get all embarassed and then theres other times when you can see them looking at you funny but they don't say anything so yes it is a real disorder and it makes my life hell sometimes! its supposed to be fairly common actually...
i made a thread about this, i used to but ive stoped now.

Course it exists. Never done it myself, used to scratch, then pick my scalp a lot tho, got infected making it more itchy, argh, yeah, not good.

I have a hate of getting eyelashes in my eye, so about once a month or so I gently remove the ones that are coming loose.

It works very well, although if I forget, and pull, I end up like the people above, with few eylashes
just a weird question but do eyelashes grow back?
i havent had this disorder but was just wondering in geenral if its like normal hair?
One of my friend use to pull all her eyelashes out when she was in year 7, due to stress she said...She looks really odd now with no eyelashes
But i still think why would you want to do that, haven't you think of the consequences of having no lashes and making you look wierd.

Answer to Student bum: No, HARDLY any of them grow back eyelashes takes yeeeeeaaaaaaaaares to grow, once gone its gone. That firend i have mentioned above, her eyelashes never really grew back since year 7, i'll say only about ha, 5 eyelashes gew back, apart from that, its still bare.

That can't be true. I was under the impression it was a few months or so.

EDIT:

A google search has backed me up here:
http://yahooligans.yahoo.com/content/ask_earl/page?d=20040106

http://www.medhelp.org/forums/dermatology/messages/31394.html

However, one result did suggest that they only grow back that quickly if they fall out naturally - which might explain why I still have eyelashes, and your friend doesn't
