advice on how to handle a situation?

I have a human physiology practical on Thursday which is going to involve having bare arms poked with a pin or something (sensory perception). The problem is, I have a lot of cuts and scars from self-harm which I'm not comfortable with people seeing. As I said, the practical is going to involve showing my arms. Can anyone see a way around this? I don't really want to miss the practical.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Tell your teacher?

How bad are they? Would a few strategically placed plasters and a watch help?

Or talk to the teacher and see what they suggest.

I'd rather not, if at all possible, specially as she's my personal tutor.

Nah, they're pretty bad. I kept it to the top of my arms and shoulders so a watch wouldn';t really help... I'd need a hell of a lot of plasters too.

Well, would a 3/4 length top cover it?

Yes, but the practical involves using the whole arm :frown: ie from shoulder to wrist.

They're allowed to do that? I'd have thought worries about HIV, etc. would have made that illegal?

If it;s anything like the practicals we did at school, it'll involve using the blunt end of a pin so the skin isn't broken.

I don't know, say to the teacher you don't feel comfortable doing it? No real advice, sorry

*shakes head*
Nope. Both equally bad, and not possible to pass off as anything else. But thanks for replying

um, everyone else seems to have made the usual suggestions, and the only think i can think of is saying that you got cuts and scratches tending to the roses in the garden - i know it sounds stupid, but i can't think of anything else, sorry!

Yeah a friend of mine had a lot of scars on her arms and whenever some1 asked her about them, she sed her cat was realky vicious and kept attacking her

Mayb u should buy some sort of cream that contains Vit E to help fade ur scars (i know this wont help u for thurs but i thought id just add it in as a general comment)

You're really going to have to cover them up, which isn't sounding possible, or get out of it. If you tell your teacher in private then you couldtry to gloss over it, and reassure them that you're well and things.

Or if you're doing it in small groups then you could have a word with your friends before hand?

Ethical considerations mean you can definitely get out of doing any experiment, the teacher should ask beforehand if anyone doesn't want to participate. Don't worry, you won't be forced to do anything you don't wanna do.

hey as i see it these are your options
1)tell your teacher , okay its embarressing and you dont realy wanna do it but teachers are trained to be considerate to these sorts of problems
2)is it possible that someoen in your class is a close friend so you can do the experiment with them, if they dont know maybe you could ahve a quiet word . if they are a friend they will understand
3)dont go. I know its against everything your meant to do but is one experiment matter that much , surely you can catch up your notes?

Vit E doesn't fade scars.

Actually it can help to. Helped with mine anyway.

How about some gauze and bandage, say your burnt it or have a large, deep graze, something like that? A bit more drastic, but will offer complete, explainable coverage that it would be unreasonable to ask you to remove?
Alternatively, just mention to your teacher, due to reasons you don't want to go into, you'd appreciate it if we could be subtly left out if possible, surely you wont all need to be poked to prove the point?
Good luck.
