When i was getting quotes, i actually found that the newer the car, the cheaper the insurance, mainly because insurance companies think you will look after your car more.
Also try companies like elephant, admiral, bell, diamond and tesco. These have proved the cheapest for me when getting quotes (last year and this year).
Also add as many people on as named drivers as possible (parents, older siblings, grandparents, aunties and uncles etc) as this lowers the price.
Compare the market is good too so try that.
Try cars like micras, clios, puntos and corsas. These cars can be brought cheap as there is so many about and are ok on insurance (well, as ok as you can get). Also, ive heard people on tsr say bigger cars, like ford focuses and rover 25's are cheaper to insure as they arent the typical small boy racer cars. Thats worth a try as well.
    Hope this helps.
