I recently discovered this on a trip to Holland.. and am now addicted. It tastes sooo much nicer than normal milk, and you don't need a fridge to store it. Anyone else?

According to wikipedia 90%+ of all milk consumed in Belgium, Spain, Portugal and France is UHT, it's much more common in continental Europe.. we should drink it more in the UK

Bleah, it tastes funny and makes your tea go grey. :yucky: It is meant to be more nutritious though.

UHT milk is horrid. I only have it in the flat because i rarely use milk. If I can I get fresh.

I believe UHT means it has been heated at a high temperature for a very short amount of time which kills something in the milk which makes it go off. Hence the long shelf life.

Downside is it tastes like crap.

If you want to avoid the weird taste, buy skimmed UHT. And by the way, you're meant to keep it in the fridge once opened...

Oh dear, if only I read your post a couple of days ago..

(Me, last night:
-have a bowl of cereal and use UHT milk which had been open for about a week and had been sitting in the heat of my bedroom.
-go to bed shortly after, wake up at 4AM with excruciating stomach cramps, run to the loo and vomit continuously, genuinely thought I was going to die)

I was gonna go to the doctors but thanks for the diagnosis

Are you thinking of the right thing? UHT seems to be thicker/creamier than normal!

I milk cows... SOOO much better straight out the cow, filtered and cooled. Much creamier and tastier yet less sweet (a type of sugar added post-pasteurization).

Sod the UHT crap when you can have 'proper' milk
