it's too colloquial if you ask me and i'd really appreciate some help with adopting a formal style of writing

'it comes as no surprise that...' isn't at all colloquial. 'Formal' doesn't mean 'uses long words', it just means using a more restrained register. Ignore the suggestion to use 'it comes to no surprise', because that doesn't make sense.
