Eton College Universities Summer School, anyone?

Does anyone else know about the Summer Schools run by Eton College for those pupils from 'maintained' [i.e. 'common') schools with ambition for Oxbridge?

Basically, they run courses in the main subjects for about 2 weeks in July for 120 pupils who apply (there is high demand for them, so selection is by Personal Statement, school ref and GCSE grades). The teaching is not intended to be revision for A-Levels, but rather be in-depth study for commited and passionate pupils, probably to help with the kind of interviews Oxbridge offer.

Anyway, I thought the course looked really interesting and useful, but would like to hear opinions on people who have been on one in previous years:

- Was it easy to fit in?
- Was the workload so difficult that you risk being made to look like an idiot?
- Did it help you with uni applications, etc?

Hi,

We are talking many years ago now, but I did this when I was 17 (back in 1998 -eek, how old am I?!) and it was absolutely brilliant. It was the first time I met people who were academically similar to me - my school was a bit of a dump, to tell the truth and I think only 5 people went to uni from my year, so it was a real eye-opener at Eton. I made some of the best friends ever, most of whom I'm still in contact with, and I really learnt a lot about my subject - the teachers are absolutely fantastic. It's hard work and long hours, but somehow we always found time to socialise as well. They also prepare you for university interviews and have panels of Oxbridge dons come along to coach you on how to make an impression. Do it, do it, do it! I still find myself reminiscing about the time I spent there. Admittedly I didn't get into Cambridge back then, but I went to Durham (did a BA and MA) and found that some of the people from Eton had turned up there too, so I'd made friends before even arriving! And even now, it's stood me in good stead as I've just been offered a place at Oxford to do my PhD (I also have a place at Durham - difficult decision to make!), and I genuinely feel a lot of my success is down to the Eton summer school. It's a great experience - I hope this helps you a bit!

Wow that's made me really want to go now!

What course did you do? I'm thinking of either the English or Politics & Economics one (I like both subjects equally), but am worried about what the 'economics' bit will be because I don't do maths A-Level but love politics?

I applied for it, but got rejected for Politics and Economics. I don't do Maths a-level, but I don't think that's why they rejected me. More likely to be because they were so over-subscribed that they pulled names out of a hat, or something! I do know someone who did politics and economics there without maths, and then went on to apply (unsuccessfully) to Oxford for PPE.

Summer Schools are great, and if you don't get into this one for the same reason as me (and that's likely given the sheer number of applicants) there are plenty of others around. I went to the Humanities Summer School at King's College, Cambridge (which was better because it was free ) and loved it. Definitely worth taking a look into if nothing else.

I did History at it this summer and it was really really good. The people there are really fun (students and teachers), and there's loads of cool stuff to do in the free time, for example the swimming pool, squash courts, tennis courts, or just lying outside (it was a heat wave when I was there this summer). It was so easy to fit into, as everyone is eager to meet new people and I'm still in contact with some of the History people on my course - I actually met three of them yesterday for the first time since leaving in Oxford during the interviews and they were all still cool. On the first day, the workload seemed to be rather high, however it did reduce a fair bit as the 10 days went on. I sometimes felt a bit dumb in the classes (mine was a class of 12) because everyone seemed to know a lot more than me, but it didn't really matter once you got to know them. There were other aspects of the 10 days that made it even more interesting - e.g. bbq on an island on the thames where u could play football or just sit around, a trip on the sunday (went to kew gardens), and for some courses there were other trips too (i went to Oxford and the National Gallery in London for history). As for helping me with my uni application, it did this quite greatly because they helped out with my personal statement and held two practice interviews. But, just come back today from Oxford interviews and I still don't feel as though my third interview was any good (where I was given a source to talk about). I would definately 100% advise you to apply for this summer school cos it really was good fun, and its probably the best thing i've done this year, and it'll remind me of this summer for ages.

met a eton guy... actually it was when one of my mate said"I hate Eton" and turned around to the guy next to him and asked "What school are you from, anything will be fine as long as it's not..."

the guy: "Eton"

(yea, he hates us)
I've heard this is pretty awesome so do apply if you can. A real chance to immerse yourself in the subject you want to study at university and receive some fantastic teaching.

Sorry not to get back quicker, have been away from my computer. I did French, so not really any use to you, but I had a friend who did History and ended up studying PPE at Oxford. I don't think they necessarily go on what you've done at A-level, provided you'd be qualified to do whatever you choose for the summer school at university. Am guessing doing PPE would be fine provided you could show the right motivation in your statement, though I obviously can't guarantee that this is the case. If in doubt, give them a bell, they're very friendly and full of tips and advice. English, I believe, is massively oversubscribed, as are all the courses, but I think English is probably one of the worst, just like it is when you apply to do it at university. For what it's worth, I think you should go for whatever you fancy doing at university, it'll be good preparation, and you'll be able to express a real passion for it in your application. If this happens to be English, then go for it, don't shy away just because you're worried about the numbers of people applying - someone's got to get those places! It's worth making something of whatever extra-curricular activities you do as well, because a fair amount of the time is spent doing sport etc. Maybe say you've always fancied a go at Eton Fives...?! And if your application should be unsuccessful, don't be too upset, there are plenty of other options, notably the ones at Oxford and Cambridge. My boyf (now a barrister) did the one at Oxford and absolutely loved it! He thinks, like I do, that these courses are fantastic preparation both academically and socially.
i did it, its def worth it. Huuge help with applying to uni. Think its quite hard to get onto for certain subjects tho.
