awesome . there should be a facebook page or something for it!!! i cant wait now!
I have a few questions.

I've been accepted to study History at the USS this year, but my school are quite contemptuous of the scheme and see it as a patronising Eton ploy to maintain its charity status by providing superfluous tuition during their holiday period which also happens to be during state school term time.

Obviously it seems like a fantastic experience, but I am trying to weigh up the value added of going. Bar qualms, I'd be feverishly sending off the acceptance form now, but I am not sure if my school's claims are at all founded.

My school (other than my form tutor) were not particularly enthusiastic about it, saying it would be detrimental to miss so much school. but I have a friend who went in 2007 and said it was so so so good, so i think it will probably be amazing  well hopefully anyhow. so i would say definitely go  .

I still haven't heard anything and seem to be the only one - quite worrying! :P Maybe my post is just awful or something. I'm so jealous of you lucky people who have been accepted already!

My school were really supportive (even if my English teacher did declare the whole concept to be totally against his old socialist bones, he also said he knows what's good for his students). Saying that, I am IB which is a very small and almost-not-quite part of the sixth form overall. The IB dept are generally very encouraging of anything that enriches your education because it's in-keeping with the programme. Dare I say, also because they know they can rely on you to catch up with anything you've missed (and I'm going to miss 3 days of mocks :eek3:)

I suppose it is a bit elitist. But from what I know of it, it's also a completely mind-blowing experience for anyone who's really into their subject and prepared to work. And the only reason it's in term-time is because they attach it on the end of Eton's summer term which finishes earlier than ours. That was my reasoning anyway. So I'd say send it in.

Ultimately, you've got to consider who this is going to affect most - you or your school? It’s what’s more important - your future or your school's morals and assumptions. It sounds to me like there might be a bit of jealousy on their part and I'd hate for that to leave you feeling like you'd missed out on an opportunity.

/end rant :o:

Hi Nicole, I'm doing economics and politics too! I'm Simone by the way  Out of interest, what subjects do you do at A level? I do maths, english lit, history and politics so I'm a bit worried I'm going to be overwhelmed by the economics part... Look forward to meeting you!

Hi Simone!

I do maths, history, economics and german so I'm just as worried about the politics part!! I'm sure it'll be fine though: they know what subjects we do so they won't expect us to know everything already

and no, I don't know anyone else who is going!
what building are you all staying in? I'm in Manor House =D

My school really pushed people to attend the summer school, as our Sixth form had an exchange going on with Eton (6 boys from each school swapping places for a week!) and really helped us with our applications.

To be honest, I'm not sure it matters whether Eton are just doing it to keep up their charity status or not. I went, (doing English) and had an amazing time. It's a great experience and it really helped me to decide which University path after sixth form. Although most people there were Oxbridge applicants, I knew all along that I didn't want to study the sort of literature their degrees would entail and the English staff on the summer school were really helpful with me making my own decisions.

I would say if you have a place, definitely go!! It's so much fun, you learn loadsss and it's really helpful!

Dont miss that opportunity and go. Come the revolution, you can say you were just checking out the cultural value for academic purposes of extending the school to the working classes. "
