Thought it would be a good idea to create a thread where those of us who want to do medicine can discuss where we're up to and give each other suggestions of what to do and "compare notes" as such...
so here goes:

Year of Entry: 2012
GCSEs: 5A*'s 6A's 1 Distinction
AS Subjects: Chemistry Physics Biology Maths
AS Module Grades: Jan 11: C A A B
A2 Prediction/Results: A A A A
Work Experience/Volunteering: 1 week in opthamology in February--planned 1 week in hospital in july, 1 week in a specialist heart and chest hospital and 1 week in gp and possibly EPQ based upon 2-3 weeks work experience over summer.
Extra Curricular:
Worked in a hospice for 3 hours every sunday since march.
On the sixth form executive committee

basically, anyone got any suggestions what i need to/can do to make my profile a bit better.

you mentioned "compare notes",

If you need some decent information about Medicine Interviews:

http://www.sci2.co.uk/Medical%20Interview%20Presentation.pdf

If you want to know more about Medical Ethics:
http://www.sci2.co.uk/An%20Introduction%20in%20Medical%20Philosophy.pdf

I hope they are useful, to Add knowledge rather than merely compare. They are My notes, which I made and are on my website. Enjoy.

It depends really on my UKCAT, but I'm thinking:

Newcastle
Birmingham
Sheffield
Nottingham

You?

Birmingham, UCL/Kings (london too expensive!) and my dad has it in his head that i'll be applying to Cambridge, doubt it'll happen considering competition. Btw, i know late response, I banned myself from my laptop to avoid distractions from revision!

Noice one...I think Uni choices will have to take a back seat for now. Getting the grades is more important, which sounds obvious, but i hadn't really realised it until now :s

I think you have to be 18 for all medicine courses in England. You have good grades though

You get loads of 17 year olds scots starting medicine aged 17 at scottish unis... TooSexyForMySteth is (well, was) an example. Not sure what the english uni policy is though.

You definitely could in interviews but not sure how well it would go down in the PS.

Would you have to mention it was family members or could you word in such a way that it doesn't really mention their relationship to me? Or would this be like lying?

Thank you too by the way.

I'm not sure... you could probably get away with not mentioning their relationship to you but I don't think saying they were family members would make your point invalid or anything.

So, say, if the interview asked "can you tell me about a time where you've had to demonstrate patience/empathy/stress management/leadership" etc, you could answer by saying that you helped your grandparents/brother and the skills you learned from it, or the skills you demonstrated, and how those skills are transferable to medicine (always relate it back to medicine!).

No problem but bear in mind I'm only in Y12 as well, I don't know much about the application process... I'm just going by what I've seen on here and what I'd want to hear if I was an interviewer.

That's about it I think - although, I'm kind of worried that I don't have something 'sporty' which can show team work but does anyone think that some of the things I do could be counted as teamwork anyway? e.g. prefect team.

I thought I didn't have a lot of extra-curricular but when I though about it. There's quite a bit right?

Duke of Edinburgh definitely does count

St John Ambulance is worth doing if you can spare the time. The key for you is getting some solid work experience sometime soon.
