youve lost me.
I was thinking, if America wanted oil, it would be quite plasuible to do a base in Iraq to guarentee supplies now. But in teh future I can guarentee that it will pour money into Afghnaistan, as it is sitting ontop of a large reserve of oil

as i said, it had already been US policy before 9/11. Bush's first term was to be based on education, taxes and reform. 9/11 forced his hand.

before this turns into another Iraq/US thread. can we stick to the relevance of 9/11 on the war.

A catalyst for war.

A smokescreen/excuse for its actions.

For an easier invasion of Iraq ie world nations more likely to accept it.

Maybe a mini Pearl Harbour? They knew what was going on, or half knew, but either were given bad info, or decided not to act.

I think it helped their cause so to speak, but they would have gone in anyway eventually.

but that would imply that 9/11 was a controlled event. ie the US planned it, which is of course, false.

They would have anyway, but (I'm all for the war to remove Sadaam) as it is it was a pretty dodgy ground, with France and what not.

They knew full well there was a threat. They attacked that US Naval ship.

I think they didnt expect something so catastrophic. Infact I dont even think Al Queda thought it would be so destructive.

well it certainly demonstrated for the first time that America was not safe from terrorism - even though a bombing had been carried out in some years previously on the south tower i think. It had been bubbling for quite some time and this was the end result - how depressing
