why does 1/ 2rootD simplify into 1/4d... is it to something to do with rationalising surds, if so i thought when you rationalise surds you only rationalise the surd part(root D in this example) and there fore it would have simplified to root d/2d

It may help to be clearer about what D and d represent, as well as using brackets, do you mean (1/2)root D or 1/(2 root D) ?
