how does (1/2)^x = 1/6

You know that \left(\dfrac{1}{2}\right)^x is the same as \dfrac{1^x}{2^x}

For the two fractions to be equal, clearly both the numerators and denominators must equal each other, so you can say that 2^x = 6.
