Hearing Problems

For a while now (at least a few years) Ive been having hearing problems. I often cant hear people talking and always have to ask people to repeat themselves, and to be honest its getting really embarassing now. Im finding that I need to have the TV/music really loud to hear it, which I never noticed until someone else told me. I worry about going places like pubs and restaurants in case I cant hear people talking.

Im thinking about going to see my doctor but I dont know if they'd just tell me to stop being stupid. There is a history of hearing loss in my family, my nan was literally deaf and my aunt had a hearing aid at the age of 25, my mum also has problems. I guess Im just worried that I might be experiencing the same thing. Ive gotten to the stage now where Im really fed up and need to do something about it. Has anyone else on here had anything similar?

Go and see a doctor. What have you got to lose? I'm sure they won't tell you that you're being silly (especially given your family history), and they may be able to help. It's clearly bothering you, so take some steps to address the problem as soon as possible. You never know, it may be something as benign as a build-up of ear wax, but even if it's not, the earlier a problem is diagnosed, the more easily it can be treated.

I have hearing problems and I'm too scared to go to the doctor!I'm the same-I often have to ask people to repeat stuff,I struggle to hear a lot of the time...this summer at one point I actually went totally deaf in both ears...I've never been so scared in my entire life.

I'd say go to the doctors if it's causing you as much bother as it is me...you might need your ears syringing or something but get it checked out in case it's something more serious.

Seriously, go to the doctors!!! If need, they can refer to the hospital to have a hearing test, and ake things from there. I had problems when I was younger and recently had to go back!

Yep, you're going to want to see a doctor about it, and worst case scenario is that you'll be sent to an audiologist.

I had a similar problem, which wasn't noticed until I was...10 or 11, I think. However, it was a hearing defect that I've had since I was born (I had an appointment with an audiologist once a year for as long as I was in high school, and it never got any better or worse)
It's just something I have to deal with, but it's not something that bothers me all that much now...there are a few things that I really have to do - for example, if I'm meeting friends in a pub, it HAS to be a very quiet pub otherwise I'll never hear a word they say, but I don't do too well in large crowds so even without the hearing defect I wouldn't want to be in a busy and/or noisy pub anyway. I have ways of getting around the vast majority of the problems with my hearing, not that there are all that many
