Humanities essay marking

What do you think from experience weighs more heavily in humanities essay marking? Is it the content that demonstrates a grasp of facts and knowledge or the critical/persuasive power of the essay as a piece of writing?

We're told they want descriptive in the first year with more critical analysis in years 2 and 3.
From my perspective as a history graduate, you don't need to be a genius to get good essay marks, rather you need to put in the hours doing lots of extra reading and know your essay topic inside out. Be able to identify not only the major themes that scholars have debated about, but also (some, not all) subtle details to show you're aware of the fuller complexity. Don't make your essay about a recitation of encyclopedic facts; use them sparingly, and only to advance your argument.
