lack of protein in diet

hey
i dont eat meat (though i do fish but not often) or cheese or eggs (the latter two i do if in things in small amounts) and i was wondering if anyone knows what negative implications this could have on my health. im worried that the lack of protein will mean i lose all my muscle and/or cant build anymore (i really want a toned figure).
If it is going to be a problem can anyone recommend any easy ways of upping my protein intake. also how much is the average person supposed to eat each day?
thanx

I know nothing about nutrition but can't you get 'protein milkshakes'? Are they just milkshakes with protein in them or are the specifically for bodybuilders or something.

I'm an ovo vegetarian and for me the thing I've had the most trouble with is my iron levels, but I've got a supplement. I try to do is eat as much marmite as possible and as many pulses as possible (beans, lentils etc). That's done me alright so far.

As far as what it will do to your body I'm not sure, but I think I heard somewhere that lack of protein can make you swell up... not sure.

Don't take my word for this, as a univeral type thingy - but personally for me, lack of protein on several previous occasions - mainly led to me feeling really really tired, nervous...mainly it affects my eyes - dark tired eyes, look like a drug addict and can feel it. I currently have this at the moment and have only myself to blame - its a little bit of a lack of fruit, my vegetable intake is non existant and im not getting enough protein.

Lack of protein - well hmm....the eyes for me, dark and exhausted...'you are what you eat' is very true..

lack of protein can cause growth failure, loss of muscle mass, decreased immunity, weakening of the heart, weakening of the respiratory system, hair loss in some and feeling weaker in general. protein malnutrition can lead to things like kwashiorkor too. it can contribute to other pretty bad things in future too.

as you dont eat meat, eggs or cheese it would be hard for you to get sufficient protein. its best to get a minimum of a gram of protein per kilogram of bodyweight. its very hard to get the complete proteins containing all of the essential amino acids from vegan foods. try to eat fish as much as you can as you eat that, also try to buy tofu and maybe a soy protein supplement. tofu is a very high source of protein and very low in fat and tastes pretty good too. soy has other benefits too, it has been proven to help lower bad cholesterol levels, and even helping things like hot flashes and much more.

as for people recommending protein shakes, most protein supplements are whey protein which derives from milk and cheese (the things she doesnt eat). if you do buy a protein supplement, make sure it is a soy protein supplement which you should be able to obtain from your local health shop as it doesnt contain milk, cheese or any meat extracts.

you can try those ovo vegetarian and lactose free meat products, like burgers and such. it is made of soy protein, sometimes rice and different spices. or maybe make a salad with red kidney beans and chick peas.

Im not sure of RI values for protein but you do need a lot, its not just that you won't be able to build or "tone up" or anything its that you will start to lose mass as well. I think the protien shakes is the best way but if you dont have milk its a prob. Best answer is red meat, lots of, if its lean its calory and cholesterol count isnt that high, so unless your a vegan your good.

Why don't you eat meat , eggs or cheese? By choice or are you allergic? It is very silly doing it by choice if it is going to affect your health this bad... Give your body what it needs, don't punish it.

well im a vegetarian (pescovegetarian technically) i dont eat meat out of choice and i dont intend to go back on that just cos of health. also if u dont have meat for a while u stop being able to stomach the thought of eating it. also i just dont really like eggs or cheese im not vegan though. i thort it was possible to get protein from other sources i just dont know where. or how much i should aim to have

yeah but i used to like meat. i just dont like the thought of eating those animals (i think it had something to do with living next to a farm, it just makes it seem a bit wrong). i have no intention whatsoever of going back to eating meat. im sure there must be a way that vegetarians can have a rounded diet otherwise all veggies and vegans would be unhealthy or ill.

So you don't eat any meat at all?

You need to stick to milk and milk derivatives then, and eggs. Eggs being the preferred choice..

Go to the shop and buy a George Foreman. Then go to the butchers and buy a 20oz piece of fillet steak. Cook. Eat. Problem solved.

Don't be a pussy and eat meat.

We were born hunters, the animals are killed in a much more humane way than 100+ years ago. You are risking your health for the sake of an animal that is going to die anyway? Im sure there are supplements, but the fact that you dont like eggs or milk is quite a worry. Maybe speak to your Doctor or something?

Fish is a good source of protein, do you eat fish?

Reply 12

Pulses and beans are always good - lentils are quite high in protein.

i think beans, pulses and nuts are the idea... i'm not really sure though to be perfectly honest...

We're hunter/gatherers actually, the human body is not exactly perfectly built for hunting, is it?

Reply 15

I didn't mean solely Hunters, we are built for gathering too, as you state. Our bodies aren't the best hunting body admitedly. You have seen the history programs though, were humans used spears and bows and arrows to hunt animals, from rabbits to deer, fish to cows!

Although i don't insult people for being vegetarian, it's a decision that i find hard to understand. Similar to no sex.

To be fair, I doubt many people nowadays are 'born hunters'. Most meat-eaters couldn't kill their own meat if they wanted to (and that includes me).

What makes me laugh is 99% of people who refuse to eat meat will happily wear leather trainers and belts.

Good going, hypocrite.

Aye it's ridiculous isn't it? I mean they would rather skin an animal, and waste the rest...!! Crazy!

Tell me about it. Almost as bad as having a steak well-done.

I'm a pescovegetarian as well, but am not for moral reasons but because I don't like meat. I have no problem getting protein, I use protein in other forms as the basis for one meal a day.
I get Realeat mince which is lovely and can be used to make any dishes that you might otherwise use mince for, also it doesnt taste like meat which is a very good thing for me personally. Veggie burgers are usually a good option too, just make sure that they are made with soya protein because ones made with veg would be lacking in protein. I also eat lots of tofu, if you dont like it yourself then you could try blending silken tofu into a drink or soup, that way you get protein without tasting it.
Pulses, beans etc are a good source of protein as well, kidney bean burgers, veggie sheperds pie, bean stews anything like that is a good idea.
If you eat fish then try and get that into your diet as much as possible too.
A lack of protein will leave you with little energy and also if you eat too many carbs as a substitute you will end up bloated and probs gain weight.
