When I come from Russia many years ago I take gcse england. I come from small town named Chornobyl. Chornobyl is beautiful town but not many schools and teachers. My brother Yuri, he tell me, you go to english, you learn language england, and you make Chornobyl proud! So I go to english and I study very much. On nights off, I drink shots of vodka to remind myself brother Yuri is still Russia, and often I bad because I miss. When it come to time of exam, I decide I am no great enough at england to get a stars. So I call Yuri, who tell me: "listen Boris. You do england, you read manuscript, you enlighten." So night before exam I look previous manuscripts of exam board, and I study more than squid. I come out with grade U. I never hear of grade U but brother Yuri, he say I know better england than all of Chornobyl. My counsel, look previous exam manuscripture, to fry good notations.

To get a grade C, you need to just follow the prompts given on the foundation paper really. Ensure you write in paragraphs and have good spelling and grammar.

Are you taking AQA's English Language Paper 1 Spec. A tomorrow?

If so, the first question you need to summarise the writer's argument - what (s)he's trying to say. You need to make one point per mark; if the question is worth six marks, make six points.

There will then be a question on facts and opinions. Here you need to identity the facts and opinions in the piece and write what effect they have. You could write something like "<whatever the fact is> is used by the reader to provide weight to their argument".

Then, you will need to compare two items. Depending on the question, this could be comparing presentational devices (images, colours, font, font size, general layout) and language (specific words, emotive language, alliteration, similies, metaphors, facts, opinions, rhetorical questions). You need to say the effect each device has. For example:

"In items one and two, language is used to convey their argument. For example, item one uses rhetorical questions to engage the reader and provoke them to think about the topic".

Ensure you use quotes to support your statements (Point Evidence Explain) and use words just as "however", "alternatively", "whereas".

In section B, I reccomend answering either the writing to argue or the writing to persuade.

For persuade, you need to be heavily biassed towards your argument. You may want to touch on the counter-argument slightly, but focus on your side of the argument.

For argue, you need to look at both sides and destroy the counter-argument to persuade the reader to agree with you.
